This review is from: You Look Awfully Like the Queen: Wit and Wisdom from the House of Windsor (Hardcover)
This is more a pamphlet than a book. It's tiny in size and very, very small in terms of humor. Purportedly a compendium of the wit and wisdom of Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, Prince Philip and the rest, it really proves how unfunny this crew is. The Queen gets off one or two quips, usually at the expense of a guest. For instance, at one dinner, she takes six breadsticks. The fellow seated next to her follows suit. Apparently this young man, seated at the right hand of the Queen at a state dinner, has no clue as to the correct number of breadsticks to take, so just follows her lead. Anyway, she eats one, he does the same. He is then very uncomfortable because he has this stack of breadsticks on his plate. At the end of dinner, the Queen feeds the rest of hers to the corgis and says to her guest: "Well, what are you going to do with yours?" Not a knee slapper, and borderline rude to a guest, but this could be the funniest thing in the book. Other than that, there are anecdotes about Princess Margaret waving her arm up and down to signify she wants another drink, Princess Anne making snotty remarks to all and sundry, Prince Philip confusing bad manners and arrogance for wit, and the Queen Mother repeating endless variations of "What are you old queens doing? This Old Queen wants a drink" to her mostly gay staff. God save the Queen. You, save your money.
