I was skeptical about purchasing "If You Love It, It Will Grow" because I have purchased many hair books and had decided not to purchase another one. However, I am glad that I purchased this book. Phoenyx Austin has really given clear information about how to care for natural hair. She incorporates both the health aspect for natural hair care by including a chapter on nutrition and hair growth, as well as coverage on categorizing hair products, ayurveda, seasonal hair tips, hair breakage & hair loss, etc. There are 20 chapters in the book and each builds on the other to give a total overview about natural hair care. The summaries at the end of each chapter ( Austin calls these the Take Home Point) are very helpful in highlighting key points. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who is interested in understanding how to take care of their natural hair from a position of love, nutrition and product use.

This book was well written and an excellent read for Black natural hair care. indeed if we love our hair it will grow. Dr, Austin made an excellent point on focusing on the products and tools we use on our hair. We should rightfully know what works for our own hair, and why it is that it works. This book is a good approach for someone seeking to get healthier longer hair, but isn't sure how to achieve it. I also enjoy that this book was in a kindle format so it can be read on the go!

If you're debating whether or not to get this book, GET IT! You won't regret it, it's chock full of useful information on maintaining, growing and excelling in your hair care journey!

Other reviews have already described the book very well so I won't go into depth about it contents. This book for me was decent.I have already came across most of the information presented besides the Ayurveda information. I think this book is geared towards new naturals or those who have very little information on hair. Most of the information can be found online. What makes this desirable is that most of the information is given in one location. I think more than anything this book excels at getting you comfortable with having natural hair and understanding its qualities. She does go over her routines which was a plus. Her discussing things like hair envy and some of the problems with going naturals like the myth that as long as you have natural hair you will attain long lengths was refreshing to see. I know lots of naturals who became so disappointed when 2-3 years down the road their hair wasn't anywhere being where they wanted it to be. They simply were not retaining length.

I don't really consider books like this good or bad."Unless the information given is inaccurate." I think it depends on where you are in your hair journey and how much information you have already absorbed so you are not wasting your money. For those who have been natural for a while and have read a lot of information concerning natural hair, I would rent or borrow this, there is not enough new information presented that will make the shelf life worth the purchase. To me what would have made this book outstanding would have been a section on protective styling, e.g. two strand twist/buns and if possible with photos or some kind of drawing to relay how to achieve the style.Even if not a section maybe a directory of the various sites you could visit to get some of the information.

This book seemed a much less in depth version of The Science of Black Hair. If you have not purchased either I would definately recommend purchasing that book instead. If you have The Science of Black Hair then I believe this book will be a waste of money for you. The most enjoyable chapters for me was her hair journey and the little information on Ayurvedic approaches to hair care. I would have appreciated more information on exactly what her regimine is and maybe how it has changed over the years. But with all that said it is a decent book.

I am so glad I bought this book. The first few chapters were very entertaining! I liked that it was not preachy at all. Its like a conversation with the bestie. The author mentions what she does and kind of guides you to different ways you could do the same. The information on the different oils and butters was exactly what I needed. I liked having the references to what the oils are helpful for. I could read it on my kindle then go to my laptop to see what was available to buy from amazon. I am particularly interested in trying the neem since lupus has done a number on my scalp. It will have you wondering why you do certain things to your hair and have you consider making some changes. I almost convinced myself to let go of the dye but right now I love my blonde so much but I will give it up and not look back one of these days! Of course if you have been taking care of your hair for a while on your own you may recognize/know some of the things about handling the hair. For instance, I knew that, since going natural, leaving your hair alone and reducing manipulation would help you to stronger healthier hair. There was, however, a lot of things I did not know and some things I knew but I did not know the hows/whys. Reading this has helped me to see that while I do love my hair I have not been showing true commitment to it. Now the real journey will begin and I will have this to guide me. Im also going to try some of these techniques on my daughter and maybe once she is older she can learn to love her hair as well. I thought the end of chapter summaries were an interesting thing for her to incorporate. If there is a chapter you feel is not too much for you, skip to the end read the summary and maybe you will discover there is something for you in the chapter after all.Read more ›
