5.0 out of 5 stars The funniest movie ever!
My husband and I have an unlimited rental movie deal, and through my curiosity, decided to rent this movie. My husband was concerned that this may have been just another "chick flick" but the instant we put the dvd into the player, we laughed hilariously throughout the entire movie. The classic case of the "inlaw from hell" and Dupree's (Owen Wilson's) freedom of spirit...

YOU, ME AND DUPREE is a formula film, a template designed for teenage guys who feel the need for potty mouth, noisy, crude guy things movies. There have been a lot of these films of late (all spinoffs of The Wedding Crasher image) and one wonders if there is a saturation point.

Relating the story is rather pointless as it is a one-line joke (?). Dupree (Owen Wilson playing Owen Wilson) is the best man at his buddy Matt Dillon's wedding to Kate Hudson (the You and Me) and subsequently moves in with them, causing all manner of mayhem and bad taste and faux pas and grim situations (think toilet problems etc). And that is it. Michael Douglas was brought in to play a flat role as Kate Hudson's father who objects to her marriage blah blah blah. Ask directors Anthony and Joe Russo for the rest.

We know that Hudson, Dillon and Douglas have much better roles to offer (Wilson seems to have found his niche), and the only reason films like this keep getting made is because they make money (for some reason) at the box office. The film is silly, tacky, tired and should only be rented if the shelves in the video store are otherwise empty... Grady Harp, November 06

3.0 out of 5 stars wife liked it, January 15, 2007
familiar story (cf Down and Out in Beverly Hills), some shouting and falling over, masturbation jokes - you know the drill. Tiresome after a while, but the wife sorta liked it after a hard day with the kids....
.
Owen Wilson - you were good in Behind Enemy Lines, so less of this boring shaggy guy thing would be nice....

1.0 out of 5 stars Painful to Watch, January 20, 2007
Not a good movie. I see the film currently averages three stars on Amazon. If you figure that there haven't been enough fans in the 60+ reviews so far to add four and five-star ratings to the film, there might be a problem somewhere. And there is.

I'm not an Owen Wilson fan, but I was pleasantly surprised by "The Wedding Crashers." I thought Matt Dillion was great in "Something About Mary," so the expectation was the we might be getting the best of both worlds in "You, Me, and Dupree." However, Wilson as Dupree comes across as a pitiful, irritating loser, while Dillion plays it straight almost the entire movie. Kate Hudson, as Dillon's new wife, is fairly easy on the eyes, while Michael Douglas, in yet another questionable movie role, plays it one-dimentional as Hudson's father, Dillion's father-in-law/boss, making every attempt to dominate the newlywed's lives. Combine all these elements and you get...not much.

You may also recall that Walter Becker and Donald Fagan from Steely Dan raised a bit of a ruckus when they claimed that the movie was based on their song "Cousin Dupree" from their "Two Against Nature" album. I don't really see where there was a correlation, but I think it best if Becker and Fagan distance themselves as far away as possible from this mess to avoid any mistaken responsibility for its creation.

As mentioned by a previous reviewer, the best part of the DVD is the gag read in the extras section. Is that enough to rent the DVD? No. But if you find yourself in a situation where you're viewing this, you can at least have something to look forward to.

Grade: D

2.0 out of 5 stars Cookie Cutter Comedy..... Skip It If You Can!, December 15, 2006
It seems like this film is too much like other "over the top" comedies trying to hard to make you laugh. To make matters worse, all of the best scenes in this movie are seen in the previews/trailers, which annoyed me! Previews/trailers are meant to give you a quick taste of the movie & create desire for you to see the movie, NOT show all the best scenes in the movie!!

Owen Wilson is the best part of this movie! He is a very witty actor and does a great job in this role. Unfortunately, Owen Wilson is getting too type cast/stereotyped by playing the same type of goofy, comedic characters he always does. I wish he'd branch out and try some new roles! His role in this film is the same type of character seen in "Zoolander", "Meet the Parents", "Wedding Crashers", "Shanghai Noon" and "Shanghai Knights", all of which were better films in my opinion!!

Alrighty then.... Matt Dillon plays a man with no backbone, who ends up marrying the daughter of a wealthy land developer, who just happens to be his boss! His new father-in-law, played by Michael Douglas, can't stand his new son-in-law and does everything he can to emasculate his new son-in-law and destroy the their new marriage.

Too top things off, Owen Wilson plays Matt Dillon's best friend in the movie. Wilson's character is a single, unemployed, well-meaning loser who ends up moving in with the newlyweds and completely disrupting their home and lifestyle.

Kate Hudson, plays Matt Dillon's wife in the movie who has a love/hate relationship with Wilson's character. She hates him in the beginning and loves him in the end, which seems so unbelievable!

The storyline is lacking anything resembling real life! All of the characters (with the exception of Owen Wilson's character) are so one dimensional it is pathetic!

3.0 out of 5 stars Was Hoping, November 22, 2006

With such a talented and likeable cast, I was hoping for more from this movie. Aside from the 3 stars, you also have Michael Douglas making a signifigant contribution to the film. He plays Hudson's father well, but the part is not written well. Hudson and Dillon mostly play things straight, which would be great if Wilson was being completely zainy. But Wilson is not really over the top as a boy trapped in a man's body, so the film sort of sputters along without any really big laughs. It tries to be sweet and amusing, but it fails more times than not. I would rent this one before considering a buy.

3.0 out of 5 stars Been There, Seen It All Before--"Dupree" Is a Mildly Amusing, But Very Familiar, Escape, January 29, 2007
What can you say about a movie like "You, Me, And Dupree?" Your first response might be, "Man, haven't I seen this movie before?" That's how familiar this buddy comedy will seem, it covers no new territory. It's not a terrible film and it has some enjoyable elements, it just lacks a creativity and spontaneity that might have branded it as compelling entertainment. As is, it's a slight and reasonably pleasant way to waste a couple of hours. You might not remember anything about it in a week, but you might get limited enjoyment in the now.

The story revolves around two college buddies. Matt Dillon, the responsible friend, has recently married Kate Hudson, gone to work for her dad (Michael Douglas), and is trying to make a place in the "grown-up" world. Owen Wilson plays the resident "Man-child," a buffoon who shirks responsibility and lives in a carefree (and hopeless) state. Conveniently, Wilson loses his place to live and so must move in with the newlyweds. Juxtaposing Wilson's antics with Hudson's stability is the comedic center of the film, and the two battle for the attentions of Dillon. Nothing new, huh? Wilson is an engaging performer, and talented, but we have seen him (and dozens of others) play this exact character time and time again. When did it become OK to continually represent 30-somethings as drifting losers? (I don't know anyone like this. Right out of college, sure--but 15 years later, not so much). But he is likable, and Hudson and Dillon are likable too. It's all so likable, if not riotously funny.

I actually found most of "Dupree" to be a pleasant, if extremely familiar, diversion. Having no ambitions whatsoever, the picture plays out as a genial poke at friendship and responsibility. The performers carry the mundane story, and it unfolds as a comfortable and watchable TV sitcom plot might. However, inexplicably, this mildly amusing endeavor goes way, way over-the top for its finale. Shifting in tone, and for reasons unnecessary to delineate, the last act of "Dupree" involves Douglas as a corporate villain (a lightweight Gordon Gecko, if you will) and our pair of heroes breaking into his offices. Turning things into an action comedy seems at odds with the rest of the picture, and the shift in tone does not serve the film well. Nothing about this conclusion is necessary or amusing.

Ultimately, "Dupree" is what "Dupree" is--a paint by numbers comedy. Instantly recognizable, there are aspects of so many other films working here--and instantly forgettable. I don't regret watching "Dupree" and I don't hate it. It's just so unassuming, it hard to generate much passion either way. KGHarris, 01/07.

1.0 out of 5 stars You, Me and Horrible Movie, December 10, 2006
By
Trevor D. Hoier "thoier" (Santa Monica, CA United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Remember when Amanda Jones slaps Hardy Jenns at his party at the end of 'Some Kind Of Wonderful'? Then there's a incredulous reaction by Kieth and his buddy Duncan. That reaction is exactly what yours will be about thirty minutes into 'You, Me and Dupree' (if you can actually make it through that amount of time).

I asked my wife about a hour into this mess exactly what this movie was about and exactly what was happening...she couldn't really tell me. The only real reason to watch it to it's conclusion is to play a game called, 'I Want To See If I Can At Least Crack A Smile At ONE Moment'. It never happened.

Owen Wilson is a guy who has no drive or ambition in life. Matt Dillon and Kate Hudson get married and take Owen (Dupree) into their house because he loses his job and is kicked out of the bar he's been sleeping at. Dupree is a bad house guest who sets living rooms on fire and plays a little too much with the neighborhood kids. Dillon and Hudson are very annoyed (just like anyone in the audience with a attention span higher than a eight month old). so they kick him out. They take him back in and then they like him. Then Dillon and Hudson's marriage goes into the dumpster and....yeah. I don't really know what's going on...still. Honestly...WHAT IS GOING ON IN THIS FEATURE PRESENTATION???

This film is a complete and total mess. It is a rare treasure in that it has not one single redeeming quality to it. Not even Kate Hudson's cute face can offer any type of entertainment value.

I read a few of the reviews where the word 'hilarious' was used multipe times. This makes me frightened for humanity and for the moviegoing public, in general. Trust me on this one when I say that you really need to save your money. Do not buy this DVD. Do not rent this DVD. If you're a neighbor to one of these people who dropped the "hilarious" bomb, tell him/her you're traveling every time they ask you to come over and watch it.

People pay thousands of dollars for therapy and advice and I just gave you some of the best advice you could ever receive....and that was/is free of charge.

2.0 out of 5 stars just ok, January 13, 2007
this film started out with some interesting things here&there. but after the middle part to the ending this film just falls flat on cliches. Owen Wilson and kate Hudson had more chemistry. Matt Dillion is alright, but He doesn't really fit his role. Michael Douglas seems ok,but His Role doesn't even really make a whole lot of sense. this film should have been Better, but it never quites get going fully.

2.0 out of 5 stars tedious, December 20, 2006
I generally like Owen Wilson and find him to be quite funny. In this movie, he plays his usual airhead character. But it wasn't that funny. To be sure, he was the bright spot of the movie, but it was not enough to carry the whole show. I often sat there watching this thing, wondering when something of substance, or even better yet something funny, would happen. This movie felt long, very long, fast-forward long. At least HD DVD picture quality was very good. But I'm glad I just rented it and I still wish I had my 2 hours back.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not Funny At All, February 21, 2007
By
A. Vegan (Ontario Canada) - See all my reviews
You, Me and Dupree is bad. First and foremost, it's tedious. It has no real direction. Things happen, and a few minutes later, it doesn't matter that they've happened. You sit there and watch 108 minutes of meaningless, witless anecdotes that involve the same people, but have no real bearing on their lives.

As far as the characters go, they really aren't characters, and they really don't go anywhere. We never learn how Carl and Molly met, or why they love one another other than that they have sex a lot. Carl says stuff like, "Molly is the best thing that's ever happened to me," but we see no proof of it. Dupree is a little eccentric, but it's all been done before. I don't know anyone in real life who is as boring as the rest of the characters with the exception of Carl's father-in-law, Mr. Thompson (Michael Douglas). But neither Dupree nor Thompson perform with enough absurdity to make the movie work.

The movie is too long and unfunny to be a comedy. And it's not that I'm opposed to body humor, it's that the movie doesn't even try to be funny for huge segments. I laughed with the rest of them when Dupree broke up Carl and Molly's intimacy because of his emergency with the "crapper." The movie needs more of that, instead of trying to sustain drama and characters that aren't there.

Once, I felt that the movie was actually taunting me. Owen Wilson watches a clip from Roman Holiday, a film starring Gregory Peck and Audrey Hepburn. As he and I saw that clip, I thought to myself, "Why am I not watching that?!" Gregory Peck and Audrey Hepburn. Owen Wilson and Kate Hudson. Hrm..... Which should I pick?
