This CD is much better than Juicy Fruit. Though there may not be one song as strong as Juicy Fruit on it, the CD (in aggregate) has few weak spots. COD and You, Me, & He are both outstanding tunes that are representative of Mtume's relaxed R&B style.

Mtume "delivers" again!,

Every time an Artist releases an album, the album gets a considerable amount of reviews about how ok the album was. This is,of Course, no excuse for an album that is one of the best of '84. Mtume popped out two albums before You, Me, and He. Of course, everyone thinks of Juicy Fruit, for which they are known for. You, Me, and He is basically a soulful soap opera due to the way the album had storylines in each song. Take the first track for instance, C.O.D (I'LL DELIVER) is a blissful love song of a pleading songbird (Tawawtha Agee) who is trying to get her man over one of the funkiest synth-electro grooves I have ever heard. The next track (YOU ARE MY SUNSHINE) is no different with the way the groove is and how James Mtume works his band like a two-dollar h#@. Speaking of That, The Title Track is I think the one of the beginnings of 'mellowdramatic' songs that gets you into it and makes you think. The track has a reprise as the MONOGAMY MIX. The rest of the album has sexually charged grooves (I SIMPLY LIKE)and jams that really are worth listening to. Indeed, James Mtume struck again with this Lp. I would buy this album and keep it in your stereo. It is a great album, and I wonder if they will ever get back together.

this is one of mtume's best the combo of him and tawatha agee is unstoppable, i really suggest any mtume fans to get his cd called "in search of the rainbow seekers" this cd has his full band with the famous mtume/lucas production in full effect the two stand out cuts are "give it on up" and "so you wanna be a star" tawatha sings the hell out of this song.

If you are into the old school r&b, then this is the album for you. I remember listening to this music and seeing the videos and it was the music that I loved to sing. I am certain that you will love to listen and sing it too.

Mtume,Tawatha,Phil,Ray And...He?,

Though James Mtume himself had gone from Miles Davis into a career with his own funk band and production work with Phyllis Hyman and others,he didn't really get any major success on his own until Juicy Fruit broke out in 1983. With it's stiffly percussive flavor and playfully racy lyrics...well they got a good hit. But this was the era of the megastar. And Mtume could've easily been typecast so easily as a one hit wonder. And it sort of happened. Even a skit towards the end of this album refers to that possibility. Fact is,Mtume had a very distinctive type of sound and a lot more to offer outside of one song. And actually there was something important they had to add to the mid 1980's musical enviroment. So here it is,1984 and Mtume and singer Tawatha come back with a sound that's again extremely spare and funky on "C.O.D","You Are My Sunshine" and of course the title song. And there's just a little of the sexual revolution era attitude left enough for them to kind of wonder in these tunes if it's possible for true love in open type relationships. Now on the REST of the album it's heavy duty FUNK! "I Simply Like" is pure, sexual rhythmic build. And "Tie Me Up" throws down with some hefty mixture of this James Brown/P-Funk hybrid type sound. Again it reflects James more in the sense of being stripped down. And on "Sweet For You And Me" and "To Be Or Not To Bop That Is The Question (Whether We Funk Or Not) first start again exploring the concluding period of the sexual revolution AND the funk era itself. When all was said and done, especially in the cover art showing Mtume and Tawatha in an old gothic house piano chamber looking as if they just attetended a funereal and/or were experiencing a breakup, there is a sense of endings here. Not the end of Mtume. But more the end of an era. Some of this music is highly influenced by the boogie funk era, though further into the groove perhaps than most. But it's one of the last funk oriented records heavily informed by the 70's type approach of JB and P-Funk. Even if the production is still 100% modern. Don't think any metaphore or irony was implied. But in fact using this music to deliver lyrics so blatently about romantic and sexual doubt really had a lot more than it probably meant to. And no matter how you cut it,it said it in the most vocally soulful and musically funky manner it possibly could.

Juicier and Fruitier!,

Here's another tight outing from the band that brought us "Juicy Fruit," but in a less funky, more groove-laden follow-up set. I'm a bit disturbed by the bad grammar in the title cut honestly, but forgive it for the musical genius which created such an endearing duet. James (Mtume) and Miss Tawatha (Agee) are GREAT together vocally. The listener can really feel the heat between them and THIS is what makes great R&B. Unlike the monster predecessor, "Juicy Fruit," this album has a more "late night" vibe about it; it's not quite as funky, but it's equally as great and features a similar "hit" formula which works to great effect. The jams flow smoothly into one another. My favorites are the opening "C.O.D. (I'll Deliver,) the magnificent title cut (which didn't fare as well as "Juicy Fruit" did surprisingly,) "You Are My Sunshine," and "Tie Me Up." It's 80's R&B/Funk perfection. I highly recommend this album and dub it "Juicy Fruit Part Two: The Affair."

I owned this on cassette back in the day. It was a frequent play. That got lost with frequent movement as I was in the military then. And now on a second marriage. So time went by and the cassette was lost. I loved the cassette and was mad happy to receive the cd. I straight reminisced, and jammed like the old days.
