Extraordinary ... one of the most talented hard rock bands ever assembled,
By
This review is from: You Are the Music We're Just the Band (Audio CD)
I use to listen to this album on 8-track tape back in the early 70's and was crazy about it at the time. The tape eventually broke, years went by, but I could still hear those Trapeze songs from "Your Are The Music" playing in my head. Recently, I discovered that the CD was being produced and subsequently acquired a copy. I suspected I would find the music dated, and would principally enjoy it for nostalgia reasons. I was wrong, it holds up wonderfully and I am still blown away by the talent of each musician and, when put together, the synergy they produce as Trapeze. The band is probably best known for the vocals provided by Glen Hughes, but what really attacted me was the outstanding guitar work of Mel Galley, and the incredible percussion by Dave Holland. These guys are fantastic, the songs are outstanding. I am still in awe when I listen to this CD over 30 years after my first introduction to the band. If you are a true hard rock lover, this is a must have disc.

What I thought Trapeze would be like,

Before buying Medusa I had never heard a Trapeze song before. But I knew about Glenn Hughes from his work with Deep Purple and less so from his work on Black Sabbath's Seventh Star. With DP his voice was soulfull and rock 'n' roll, and the music was rockin' and funky. I expected that would be what I would find with Trapeze. Reading the reviews here I figured Medusa would be the album to go with, but honestly I was not too thrilled. The album was good but never really hit me. Hughes often sounded a bit more like early Sabbath Ozzy and the music was more like Free meets early Judas Priest. This album, however, is what I thought Trapeze would be like. It's a combination of seventies funk/rock plus hard rock. The album opens with a blistering guitar attack of heavy chords with a thumping beat. The song lightens up a bit after the intro but the album already has my attention. The next two tracks have Hughes giving us his voice in full range, with so much range and variety I can't believe it's the same guy on Medusa. Sometime during all that touring in the U.S. he seems to have really found his voice. From Uriah Heep-like shrill screams to thick-throated soulful laments Hughes comes across like three different singers before the album is half through. Indeed, he is credited with "all voices" in the jacket. The songs come out funky or heavy, with tracks like Way Back to the Bone and Feelin' So Much Better Now letting the heavy guitar beast out of the cage. Mel Galley totally cooks on some of the solos and Dave Holland gives his drums a good workout. All three members seem to have found new sounds and new ideas with which to work and they are giving it everything they have. Though the sound quality is a slight bit muddy on this album, the talent and energy more than make up for it. I'm glad I found the Trapeze I was looking for.

Still a great album!,

I have all 3 Trapeze releases on vinyl. I'm SO glad to see them on CD because now I can enjoy one of the best bands of the '70s with the quality of a CD. Glenn Hughes has one of the most powerful voices I've ever heard, and this band is so tight it's easy to see why their music is still in demand.

As far as three guys go, this is definitely great rock n roll! Galley, Hughes, and Holland, unite again for a barn burning set of intense music. Their careers were way too short, at least as Trapeze, but their influence on the music scene was immense. The vocals of Glenn Hughes are undeniably great, as is his deep bass sound. Galley and Holland are no slouches on their instuments either. This disc starts out on fire with "Keeping Time" and burns through til the title track, "You Are the Music, We're Just the Band. Another couple of my favorite tracks are "Coast to Coast" and "Loser". This CD is a great dose of unforgettable 70's rock that is still as vital today as it was then. Like a fine wine, some things just get better with age.

As careers come and go, the life of Trapeze was far too short. For a shooting star glance at their career - GET THIS RECORD. Glenn Hughes' voice and accompanying bass and keyboard playing are absolutely incredible. The Talley brothers (rounding out this power trio) are no slouches either, rather, they throw a bit of their weight around as well. The title track and "Feelin' Better Now" are incindiary rock classics that all rockers should expose themselves too. And for the ballad fans there's "What is a Woman's Role" and "Coast to Coast" should amply fill the platter. These guys were much more deserving of fame and fortune than many of their counterparts yet in an unfair world they chose to kick some rock b*tt and let the rest of it fall where ever it landed. Thank goodness we have memories, vynyl, and after far too long a wait CD's to bang our collective heads to. If this stuff is stylistically your bag - check out the soon to be released CD from a Nashville funk band THE JONES - "Showtime At The Apocalypse" soon to be available through amazon.com too. Keep rockin' all.

"You are the music we're just the band" is a ground breaking album, believe me, there was nothing like it in 1972. It predates the chilli peppers by 25 years. The first Trapeze album as a five piece had an aura of their mates "The Moody Blues" , the second album 'Medusa' [the first one as a three piece] they couldn't decide whether to be the new Free, or the next Black Sabbath. But with "you are the music" they were most definitely Trapeze, helped I think by the vastly underrated producer, Neil Slaven. One great album! I sometimes wonder what would have happened if Glen hadn't have joined Deep Purple - what would they have become. Their sound somewhat stolen a few years later by Wild Cherry and their hit 'play that funky music whiteboy'. This CD however, on the Lemon Records label was taken from vinyl. The sound being compressed and less superior to the London release of 1996. I hope there are plans for a re-release from the original master tapes similar to the upcoming Medusa album apparently from the original tapes. Kevin Spiers

Great album,
This review is from: You Are the Music We're Just the Band (Audio CD)
I'm fairly sure this photo was taken at the Overton Park Shell in Memphis and I attended this show. They were headlining and Marshall Tucker Band was the lead-in group (had just released their 1st album). This concert was one of the BEST I've ever seen!!! (and in the 70's Memphis had tons of great shows). When this album came out, I was blown away. This band flew under the radar for some stange reason?? They were really, really good!!!

This album is a must have to any collection. the driving force that Trapeze has, shows. The songs "LOSER" ,You Are The Music" and "Keepin Time' are some of the best put together rock songs that I've heard in awhile. "Coast to Coast" and "What is a Womans Role" are slow but driving songs. Get this Cd and you will not be disappointed.

hard rock with very good taste,

why does this album has deserved few attention by reviewrs and amazon customers? isn't it a pitty? You a re the music, starting from the cover art, has that fresh feeling of good mood music for young and restless people. This third release goes distant from prevoius two pre-metal-style albuns. When you listen to Medusa you find out where did Judas Priest took their heavy metal sound, no wonder Trapeze's drummer went to Judas, a few years later. But, back to the album, it flows from really hard rock tunes like Keepin'time, feeling some much better now, loser, way back to the bone (the heaviest) and the title track, goes through soulful bluesy ballads, with extremely good taste, for instance What is a woman's role, coast to coast and Will our love end. There's no great production to the album, but it helps catching a good fresh vibe from all the tracks, and remain that power trio feeling. this is album does the difference when it comes to refere Trapeze as a good rock and roll band not only a unknown band that served only to jump their members to future successful bands, as Deep Purple and Black sabbath (Hughes), Whitesnake (Galley)and Judas Priest (holland) Despite Holland is such a mediocre drummer, we have a great guitar work from Galley and a great singer/player/composer Hughes, not yet overshadowed by Purple's ego monsters: Lord and Blackmore. Finally, it's a good quintessencial 70's hard rock album.

Excellent album, really great stuff, ranging from hard, funky rock to softer, jazzier ballads - and a fantastic mix of the two in "What is a Woman's Role?" which also features one of the best guitar leads on any trapeze record. The sound quality of this reissue is quite good too. All in all, if you're a fan of the band, Glenn Hughes, or just great rock music in gneeral you should own this album - highly recommended!!!
