Book Description

June 15, 2009
"I loved this book," says Dora Dueck, writer and editor, who is author of several books and co-editor of Northern Lights: An Anthology of Contemporary Christian Writing in Canada (Wiley, 2008). "This is Katie's life, her name, her harvest of work and discovery. But something wonderful happened as I read what she shares so honestly and well: I saw my own story--and felt it good, and safer again, to be a writer, pilgrim, woman in the MB church." This memoir records Katie Funk Wiebe's search for identity as a woman left widowed with young children who becomes a writer and an early Mennonite and biblical feminist. "Through her vulnerability," comments Doug Heidebrecht, Director of the Centre for Mennonite Brethren Studies, Winnipeg, "Katie invites us to recognize ourselves and to perceive God's grace in the midst of life. Katie's masterful storytelling is a gift." And Valerie Weaver-Zercher, contributing editor to Sojourners, thinks "This is vintage Funk Wiebe: unaffected, spirited, and unblinking."

I didn't care for her style of writing. The timeline was confusing as she kept skipping from year to year, backwards and forwards.

4.0 out of 5 stars Those who fail to remember the past are bound to repeat it...., May 23, 2011
This review is from: You Never Gave Me a Name: One Mennonite Woman's Story (Paperback)
This was an important book to learn about the past, where we've come from, how we got where we are, particularly on the topic of women in church leadership, and where we still need to go. I learned allot about Mennonite Brethren (MB) church polity and theology, Canadian Mennonites and their history with the MBs, and about church publishing. Most importantly I learned about choosing to be accountable to God first, instead of church theologies, that is, claiming one's gifts and passions and using them to serve God even when the church or its leadership will not recognize your contribution b/c who you are does not fit their idea of who God gives those gifts to. She also has some good thoughts at the end of the book about the valueing of persons who "be" when they can no longer "do."

5.0 out of 5 stars Katie's Words Speak to the Next Generation, October 31, 2010
This review is from: You Never Gave Me a Name: One Mennonite Woman's Story (Paperback)
I love this book! Although part of a younger generation, as a Mennonite woman I relate to Katie's struggles. How do I prioritize? What is my responsibility to church? To family? Katie's story leaves me feeling very grateful for the women who paved the path ahead of me. And makes me consider what my responsibility is to those who come after...
