One of the best psychobilly albums ever crafted,

This review is from: You the Night & The Music (Audio CD)
Before this, Gallon Drunk's singles were wild, dramatic, and bewitching, but borderline exhausting. After this, their LPs flowed more smoothly, but a mock-lounge attitude gradually replaced the haunted quality of their early work. YOU, THE NIGHT...AND THE MUSIC may be their best album because it straddles that line almost perfectly. From the funky rave-up "Some Fool's Mess" and the brooding drinking song "Just One More," to the primeval boogie of "Two Wings Mambo" and the climactic bruiser "The Tornado," the energy of the band never lets up -- but it's delivered with purpose, as well as slick production that amplifies rather than compromises it.Admittedly, it's still a brisk album and can overwhelm the casual listener, even after 32 minutes. (The seductive title track and the ballad "Eye Of The Storm" break up the fierce rhythm, but only a little.) Plus, the band makes the LED ZEPPELIN IV mistake by not saving their biggest song, which is in fact called "Gallon Drunk," for last. With music this good, though, it's all nitpicking. This is rock and roll for a voodoo soul, extravagantly dark but just as entertaining.
