ANDAIN - TURN UP THE SOUND

Biography

Andain's story is one of divine electronica, spine-tingling lyrics and considerable patience. Clubbers worldwide began to know their music as the euphoric backdrop to the best nights out after trance heavyweight Tiësto snapped up their very first track to license to his Search For Sunrise compilation. But Andain, the band, isn't a traditional dance act.

Editorial Reviews

Andain is back from never having been away with her brand New Album You Once Told Me. The powerful production and deeply emotive character of all songs shape the perfect canvas for Mavies soaring vocals, which create a truly sparking, emotional and most of all state of the art listening experience.

All I can say is, it's about time. I've loved Andain since hearing the single for "Beautiful Things" almost a decade ago, but it was a pain having to track down their songs one at a time, scattered over various mixed albums. It was worth the wait though, and I hope they keep it up. Mavie has a beautiful voice, and the music is non-techno/electro/whatever-ish enough to avoid turning off non-fans of the genre. Along with the new material, it was fun getting to hear new versions of "Ave Maria" and "You Once Told Me" actually done by the band, rather than just remixes by other groups. I listened to the album for about two weeks straight before swapping it out so I didn't overdo it, but I'm still happy every time one of the songs pops up on random.

The best music stays with you for years, and Andain's wonderful electronica (paired with Mavie Marcos' angelic voice) has been in the hearts of fans for nearly a decade. This is their first full-length album, and while it has the same deep, dark feel as the songs I knew them for, it also draws influences from more ethereal artists like Enya and Bitstream Dream. This is most evident in the middle tracks, as 6-9 and 11 are very different from the rest (8 is practically an instrumental track and 11 is basically a lullaby). They're still pleasant enough to listen to, but the rest are the real attraction: Turn Up The Sound, Much Too Much, Promises and You Once Told Me (album mix) are worth the price alone. Sadly, Andain's early tracks aren't on the album, and the included remixes sound badly out of place; Promises (Koan Sound Remix) is decent by itself, but Much Too Much (Rido Remix) turns a lovely song into annoying drum and bass, while Turn Up The Sound (Stratus Remix) is aggravating dub-step. I say that not because I don't like harder music; it just doesn't mesh with the rest of this album and seems like a waste when they could have included better remixes (check out the Much Too Much - Zetandel Chill Remix) or their prior successful tracks (Get Up, You Once Told Me, Make Me, Summer Calling, Beautiful Things). I still enjoy most of the album and do recommend it; just take the time to replace the remixes with what I mentioned for a more compelling chillout experience!
