Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

The fifth entry in the You Read to Me, I’ll Read to You series repeats the earlier books’ winning formula: text in two columns and two colors, set off to clearly delineate how to break up the stories to be shared by two readers out loud. This time, fables are featured, some commonly known (“The Hare and the Tortoise”) and others less familiar (“The Peacock and the Crane”). All are retold simply and engagingly and are illustrated with lively spot illustrations. Best for children who are already comfortable reading out loud, this would work as well with two young readers as it would with a child and an adult. Grades 1-4. --Diane Foote

- A Chicago Public Library 2010 Best of the Best

"Children's poet laureate Hoberman is really the master of unforced rhyme ... and Emberley's pencil-and-watercolor illustrations are as consistently spry as the poems."—The Horn Book

"Emberley's pencil and watercolor spot illustrations bring fresh energy to the classic tales as well as a softening tone: the Hare and the Tortoise race on bicycles (the Hare wears spandex), and the golden-egg laying goose has a button-up chest, ensuring that the farmer doesn't have to use his knife. The jaunty rhymes and theatrical element of adopting a persona should spark enthusiasm from reluctant readers."—Publishers Weekly

"Repeats the earlier books' winning formula...All are retold simply and engagingly and are illustrated with lively spot illustrations."—Booklist

"The latest installment from [the] wildly successful series...the text is delivered in punchy, color-coded typography that makes abundant use of repetition and rhyme to bring the stories to readaloud life. Emberley's playful illustrations provide fresh interpretations of many of the tales."—Bulletin for the Center of Children's Books

"The familiar tales are told with gentle humor, and Emberley's pencil-and-watercolor illustrations bring personality and life to the animal characters...a solid pick for most picture-book collections."—School Library Journal

To my delight, when her reading time was up, she wanted to continue until we finished the book.

And so do I. Not only are the fables (told in delightful rhyme) entertaining to read together, but the accompanying drawings are amazing and equally enjoyable.
Elaine
If you have children or grandchildren in the 6 to 7 year old range this series of books is the greatest sharing and reading experience you can have with them.

Hoberman has structured the text into "two voices" with sections of choral passages that allows readers the opportunity to interact with the text in a new way. The rhyme, rhythm, and repetition are also fun. Nice illustrations to match!

I love this format and author!

I have several books in this series, but this one is my favorite. Many kids today do not know these fables, so the stories are new to them. The lessons are timeless and very applicable to their everyday lives.

Love it! Love it! Love it!

This book is part of the series You Read to Me, I'll Read to You, from Little, Brown and Company Books. The book features color-coded text meant for two readers to read back and forth, with a third color for the readers to read together. This particular book is based on Aesop's fables, including The Hare and the Tortoise, the Boy Who Cried Wolf, and others.

This is a very good book, though probably a little too advanced for the first grade reader - with words such as quench and plight. The illustration work is very nice, and goes along good with the text.

My young reader and I both loved this book, and we both highly recommend it!

Bought this for my 7 yiear old granddaughter. She loves the me read, you read format - and so do I. It meets my goals - letting her learn that reading is fun. She loves the interaction with an adult reader. Try it, I think you'll like it.

I bought these books for my seven year old granddaughter. For homework each night she is supposed to read for 15 minutes. As soon as I gave it to her she wanted to start it. So we sat on the couch and started it. She loved the concept of me reading one line and she reading the next. To my delight, when her reading time was up, she wanted to continue until we finished the book. I know that she and her two younger brothers will be reading these books for a long time to come.
