4.0 out of 5 stars Nice and Easy, but not too easy
The two workouts are really decent. The first one gets you into working out if you haven't or it's a good workout for someone who has limited abilities (or age). The second workout pumps you up a little harder. I think both of the exercise routines are less than 20 minutes. The moves are easy to remember and for some of the warmout moves or stretches I find myself...

3.0 out of 5 stars YOU: Staying Young Workout ... maybe
This work out sure isn't geared to out-of-shape middle-agers. I do what I can and hope I can eventually do it like I'm suppose to. (lol) I do like the variety of (3) very different workouts and the guys seem to know what they are talking about.

The two workouts are really decent. The first one gets you into working out if you haven't or it's a good workout for someone who has limited abilities (or age). The second workout pumps you up a little harder. I think both of the exercise routines are less than 20 minutes. The moves are easy to remember and for some of the warmout moves or stretches I find myself doing them when I have a few minutes on my hands or I'm waiting somewhere.
The chi gong routine is great. I would have liked more of it. It really does boost your energy and I feel extremely at peace and joyful when I finish it.
With all workouts and basically anything in life - you get out of it, what you put into it.

5.0 out of 5 stars so worth getting!, December 24, 2007
This review is from: You: Staying Young Workout (DVD)
I really love Joel's workouts! You hit all the majors and the core in 20 minutes or less, you need no equipment and very little space. Level 2 on this is under 20min. and you will still break a sweat! Joel has a warm, friendly presence, not at all intimidating. Another winner.

Finally something I can learn to do...chi gong. I tried TaiChi and couldn't get it...this works for me and it is something I will do every morning. Quick, easy and effective. Love it.

My friend and I really enjoy this dvd as we are both a bit older and not as flexible as we once were. This feels good to do but is not complicated and I have not quit doing the workout. Helps my balance and feels great.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great for beginners, December 3, 2007
This review is from: You: Staying Young Workout (DVD)
The YOU Staying Young workout is great for those of us who are beginners. I am not in very good shape and do not exercise consistently but I found I could do the exercises on this DVD easily. It might not be challenging enough for those that exercise daily.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very convenient for anyone who wants to get in shape or improve his / her athletic performance, February 9, 2009

Joel Harper and his partner clearly demonstrate two short all body workouts without any instruments that you can do at home, outdoors or in a gym. The workouts are for beginner and advanced levels. Not only do the programs cover most muscles in the body but they also give them different types of workouts : 1 ) isotonic strength exercise ( dynamic ) 2 ) isometric strength exercise ( static ) 3 ) stretching. Joel Harper particulary emphasizes the importance of correct breathing during the exercises and keeps on reminding it. Even the beginner level can be made advanced by increasing the number of repetitions. I have been doing various kinds of sports for years and have incorporated Joel Harper's workouts into my program. I disagree that they are too easy. If you are an absolute beginner do the same exercises slowly with a low number of repetitions. As you advance just increase the number of reps and it is no longer beginner level. Even the best performing athletes can benefit from these two programs by increasing the number of reps to their levels of fitness. That's what I did.

In the DVD all exercises have written names, so it is possible to write down a program and do it without watching the DVD as you exercise. That's what I do because I prefer to do them in a gym not at home, also I do the exercises longer with more reps than in the DVD. I recommend that you watch the DVD several times before you do the exercises. Some reviewers have complained that as they exercise the DVD moves into another exercise too quickly so they can not keep up. Who told them to try to do the exercises while watching the DVD for the first time ? You won't have keeping up problems if you watch it several times before doing them. In fact if you write a program with the names of the exercises and watch the DVD several times in advance you can do them anywhere without putting on the DVD.

Even though I swim, play tennis, treadmill, stretch and lift weights regularly I still get a good workout from Joel Harper's programs. In fact it has contributed to the variety that I needed in my exercise routine. Doing the same kind of exercises every week gets boring and muscular development slows. Variety is necessary in any workout program to prevent boredom and shock the muscles so that they don't get stale with the same routine. Joel Harper's programs have helped me in this aspect when I combined them with the other kinds of sports I do. Moreover, by contributing to my fitness they helped me improve my performance in the other types of workouts.

If I feel tired I can make the programs easier by just decreasing the number of reps. The programs are convenient for busy people because they are short, about 20 to 25 minutes. If you have the time and the level of fitness necessary you can inrease the duration to about an hour by increasing the number of reps.

The Chi- Gong program by Karl Romain, the Kung Fu world champion also in this DVD is interesting but I have not applied it yet.

If you are interested in more detailed and advanced exercises I recommend the Fitpack DVD by Joel Harper as well. I purchased it after this one. The exercise program in the Staying Young and Fitpack DVDs are different so you will not be purchasing the same programs twice. The latter has 9 different programs on two discs running 170 minutes. Many men, women and children demonstrate the various programs with Joel at beginner, intermediate and advanced levels at the same time. One of the programs is a full body workout, the others are shoulder, legs, abs, back and cardio programs. They are longer and more detailed than in this DVD but different. You can combine the various programs in different ways and provide the variety that your body needs in workouts.

The "You Staying Young Workout" DVD is a helpful learning aid like a "show and tell Version of the "cheat sheets" found in the book. Joel Harper illustrates his exercises well both at beginner and advanced levels. His running commentary helps to clarify his procedures even more. Karal Romain makes the Chi-Gong exercises easier to follow, especially when demonstrating the proper sequence of breathing in the process of seaking health benefits. Both trainers have assistants in the role of trainees to provide a more natural team approach to these exercises.Compared to the group exercises of Tai-Chi that I had participated in before, I find the DVD approach to Chi-Gong more efficient and even more liberating allowing me to review and to examine the exercises at my convenience and my own pace. In that sense the DVD has raised the physical education aspects of the book to life.

Purchased this dvd after watching a television program featuring Dr. Oz and normal people losing weight by eating right, walking 10,000 steps and working out without weights and following this dvd. I haven't lost weight but have lost inches on my waist and thighs.

4.0 out of 5 stars Like the DVD, January 18, 2008

I like the book, it has good information but not wild about the way it is written with the corny diagrams as it makes it a little hard to follow. Some of that is okay, but it's a bit much. I love the DVD especially the Qigong workout - it was worth the price of the entire package. I use that several times a week and would like to see more Qigong. The guy on the other workouts is tough and relentless so not enjoyable and it doesn't motivate me when I have to try to keep up. Overall I think a good purchase.
