Editorial Reviews

About the Artist

Mark Miller was born and raised in Toronto, Canada. The same place that served as the launching ground for notable singer/songwriters Jim Cuddy, Greg Keelor, Steven Page and Ed Robertson. And the same place that continues to produce a steady stream of critically celebrated bands including Blue Rodeo, Skydiggers and The Sadies. While Miller shares roots in common with these and other artists, his story - from 'never heard of him' musician to top ten selling independent artist - is perhaps more unusual than it is common. That's because, up until the recording of his first album, Happy, the only way to have heard him play was to have been an invited guest to his favorite small stage - his living room studio environment.

Product Description

Moving on sometimes means looking back. And thematically, that's what Mark Miller's new record, You Were Here, is all about. It's a look back at losing purpose and direction, discovering fatal flaws, coming to terms with failures, leaning on friends, and finding hope and inspiration from within. Yes, the subject matter sometimes seems a little dark. And, yes, the stories feel personal. But, musically and lyrically, dark themes and personal stories are translated into very accessible songs that invite the audience to listen in and sing along. You Were Here is sadness made happy through music. It's solace for misery seeking company.

For fans of previous releases, Mark Miller's You Were Here offers enough songwriting continuity to feel instantly gratifying, and enough musical surprises to feel worth the four year wait between recordings. For those newer to the artist, imagine a little bit of Steve Earle's sound, some of Mick Jagger's voice, and a whole lot of upbeat songs about feeling downbeat. The songwriting always seems to start in a familiar place, but then makes the kinds of twists and turns that take the music to new, more interesting places. If you're looking to connect with an artist and set of songs that deliver a laugh and a tear, Mark Miller and his latest release, You Were Here, might just be the perfect musical fit.

5.0 out of 5 stars songs from the heart, September 13, 2009

I got Mark Miller's new CD "you were here" this week in the mail and it's amazing. I've been playing it non-stop in my car. It's good driving music. I think it has more of a fuller band sound than his last two cds which are also great. I really like the sound of his female backup singer too, Mara Hitner. Brilliant! My boyfriend thinks he's got a Steve Earle thing going on. We grooved along in the car to the song "you're so strange" and labeled it "the cowbell song"; i don't know if it has a cowbell but it's that kind of song. Mark's songwriting always makes me think of Bob Dylan. I think my favorite song is "the great pretender" because the lyrics are offered up in delightful morsel bits, the delivery is best-friend conversational, and the music's got a back and forth kinda sway. Some songs I get an Alanis Morissette reaction like what woman did this to your heart? I guess we have to thank the muse. Not all the songs though: "call on me" for example feels like you shouldn't give up hope in the world with beautiful harmonies and violin. It's been awhile since I've listened to a cd so much, thanks, Mark!

5.0 out of 5 stars Well worth the wait., March 31, 2010

Mark Miller's new CD was well worth the long wait! He's taken this CD to the next level with a fuller sound but at the same time has kept the integrity that makes his music so unique. His lyrics speak to everyone who's ever dealt with heartbreak and makes you think of your life and situations in a new light. I particularly love "Last Laugh", it's a great song to listen to when you feel like things just aren't going to get better but need some reassurance that someday they will. I highly recommend this CD to anyone and everyone.
