Book Description

August 5, 2009
Tru, a performing singer-songwriter, and Brittany, a photographer, shared a beautiful home on Red Mountain in Colorado, enjoyed horseback riding in the snow-laden hills, and romantic nights in front of the fireplace. But when an average day ends in a tragic accident, Tru must embark upon a quest to regain the life she once had with her lover, while sinister outsiders take advantage of the precarious situation. Yearning, revelations, and lurking danger pull at the threads of a once-idyllic life. As You Were is a romantic story driven by mystery and suspense.

Editorial Reviews

About the Author

Baeli was born to spin a yarn. The daughter of a professional musician, she arrived in Wichita and began her journey with a song in her heart and a plethora of passion erupting from her pen. This love of lyrics, prose and poetry was just the simple seed of what would grow into a wordsmith's obsession with the creation of multifarious characters and storylines that fork with dual plot lines into romance and intrigue. Oklahoma, Arkansas and Colorado are just a few locales that surface in Baeli's novels as these places are ones she drank in from her time in University, to retreating for self exploration. Each place is rich in bucolic terrain and provided grand palettes for her mysteries and suspenseful romances. Townies and their coveted colloquialisms provided divine fodder for tales too real to be true. There is nothing like experience to craft a character. Baeli has plenty to spare—from a stint in the military to late nights spent delivering newspapers or waiting tables, to being a technical writer for a corporate jet company. Each job was a necessity, but one that Baeli turned into a study in the human condition or sometimes inhumane conditions. Some of Baeli's fondest endeavors were fronting an all female band for seven years in Little Rock and her enjoyable time as a managing editor for a women's press. In recent years, Baeli has pursued technology with a perverse passion. Website building, blogging and creating and maintaining online forums have shared the docket with her ever-present story crafting. Baeli has relied on her technical writing roots and expanded her repertoire, enabling her to edit for herself and other writers, both accomplished and aspiring. With over 200 song writing credits and 22 books to her credit, Kelli Jae Baeli shows no signs of wear. She has returned to her beloved Colorado where she may be found amongst the Denverites, people-watching over coffee and conversation... awaiting the next story to inspire and entrance. ~Justice Harlow

More About the Author

Kelli Jae Baeli began writing as a child, exploring poetry and journaling, and eventually moving on to short stories. After a romantic fling in the military with another female soldier, she decided to write a book based on the experience. The story that evolved took on a life of its own, but it became her first novel, As You Were. This was followed quickly by Armchair Detective, a book she said she wrote because she couldn't find other lesbian fiction she liked and so wanted to write something she would want to read. She's been doing that ever since.

Creativity comes as easily as breathing to Baeli. Living a life around words, books, art and music not only fulfills her, but defines her.
An independent publisher, she has written and produced 33 books, both non-fiction and fiction in a variety of genres, with many more planned.

Believing in mastering every aspect of the business, she is also an editor, webmaster and blogger, all after eight years pursuing a B.A. in Professional Writing & Editing. Formerly a managing editor for two small presses, and a freelance editor since 1995, Baeli has also done book cover design, typography, and formatting since 1998.

Formerly a managing editor for two small presses, and a freelance editor since 1995, she has now co-founded Lesbian Literati Press with her partner and fellow author Kate Genet. All this in addition to maintaining the Kindred Ink Writer's Initiative, Kind Red Ink Editing Services, a blog and three forums.

Constantly mining the world around her for literary tidbits, Baeli is always to be found with notebook in hand, a self-confessed word magpie who sees everywhere the fodder for her stories and essays.

She is also a talented singer/songwriter with over 200 songs to her credit. A canny mix of business woman and artist, Kelli Jae Baeli is delighted to spend each and every day feeding her muse.

Relocated from Colorado, Baeli now makes her home on what feels to her like the brave new planet of New Zealand with her Kiwi partner Kate Genet. She looks forward to a life rich in words, music and stories.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Read...left me wanting moe December 30, 2010
By Kristi

WOW. I purchased this book simply caught up in the avaliability of lesbian romance novels at the touch of a button. My wifey gave me a Kindle for Christmas, spurring a desperate search for novels to use with my newfound "friend". I don't live near any specialty bookstores and lesbian novels are often very expensive for print copies. I went a little wild looking for romance stories I can relate to.

This novel surpassed that!

Others I've read were okay in content, horrible in spelling and grammar, and difficult to read. Not so, this novel. I downloaded another book by Baeli simply because this one caught and held my attention. I stayed up way past bedtime reading this, absorbing it in one night because I could NOT put it down. It had romance, crazy twists, and many other positive characteristics. However, the best part of this book was Baeli's sensitivity to the thoughts, feelings, and realities of life as a woman who loves a woman. She captured the essence of female romance without so much as a glitch. I read this book snuggled in next to my wife and fell asleep with a sappy, mushy, and very glowing appreciation for the beauty who lay next to me. Like all great romance novels, this book wrapped me up in the moment.

Thank you, Ms. Baeli. I'll be purchasing your other novels as soon as I can!

5.0 out of 5 stars What an amazing seduction! February 13, 2010
Format:Paperback
Reading this book made me cry, laugh, and feel as though I had been blissfully seduced...and I'm not a lesbian!LOL! But as I have found with other books written by Kelli Jae Baeli,(she writes both lesbian and mainstream novels)it doesn't matter what your sexual preference is in the end. I fall in love with all of her characters, as I did once again with those in this novel, and feel as though I am personally involved in the story. It is a greatly suspenseful, beautifully romantic tale of renewed/re-claimed love that seduced me into staying up til 5:46 a.m. on a work day because I COULD NOT PUT IT DOWN until I finished it. In the Author's Note, Ms Baeli writes. "I hope you enjoy it." Ms. Baeli, that is an understatement! I absolutely adored this story. Thanks for yet another wonderful novel to read! (I've read 5 of them now and am starting the sixth tomorrow)

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent romance September 1, 2012
By TerryB
Format:Kindle Edition
Singer/songwriter Tru Morgan is totally in love with her live in girl friend Brittany (Brit) Jabot. Together they share a wonderful home on Red Mountain, Colorado. Their lives are idyllic, filled with their dreams, romantic nights and riding their beloved horses in a fairy tale, snowy setting. Life just couldn't get much better for them....... Until one day, a malicious chain of events ends up being the indirect cause cause of a tragic accident.

Tru finds herself fighting to find the life she once had with Brit. This in itself is an uphill struggle, but add to it disruptive outside influences and it is going to be almost an impossibility. Some people just do not want to see Tru and Brit back together.

The question that has to be asked is.... Will Tru and Brit ever find their way back to the love so callously torn from them?

A well written and highly enjoyable romance, mystery and intrigue, with a light touch of humor. Although this story is basically a romance, there is so much more packed into it. So many twists and turns and ups and downs, it's a real rollercoaster ride of highs and lows. I simply couldn't put this book down and couldn't turn the pages fast enough. I had to force myself to slow down. I wouldn't advise starting this late at night, unless you don't need to sleep.

The two main characters, Tru and Brit are poles apart throughout most of the book. I don't want to put in any spoilers, but the emotional ride they are on, is hard going for them. The only thing I will say is, I wasn't disappointed with the outcome of the story.

All the characters in the book were well formed and they each played their parts in progressing the story forward.

I did not care for the part of the brother trying to get both of the main characters in bed. The rest of the story ,the parts with them dealing with the one not remembering and the killer was exciting and fun to read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well written. April 28, 2012

This book is a winner! You will want to read the book in one evening, so forget about going to bed. The characters are well developed. The dialogue is believable. The plot has twists and turns: romance, suspense, humor and expectation. It is one of those books that when you finish, you will feel sad...you will want the story to go on.
