5.0 out of 5 stars He has what it takes, September 20, 2000

This review is from: You Got What It Takes (Audio CD)
Kevin Mahogany has matured beautifully in his ability to honor melodies and lyrics while showing us his style and enjoying himself at the same time. Here's That Rainy Day and Please Send Me Someone To Love are rendered with tenderness fitting a blues style reminiscent of Sinatra's It's Three O'Clock In The Morning. Route 66, Just In Time, and My Funny Valentine are classics that he makes his own, without any disrespect to the original hit artists. He has fun with Baby You Got What It Takes (sung with Jeanie Bryson and with gusto) and plays with Stockholm Sweetnin' and BG's Groove -- keeps your heart jumpin' and your toes tappin'! Fabulous backup provided by Benny Golson's tenor sax, James Williams piano, Michael Formanek's bass, and VIctor Lewis's drums -- clean arrangements neatly executed. I don't know of a better successor to the late great Joe Williams.
