I just bought this, thinking that it was a new book of recipes; imagine my surprise when I read inside the book that it was the same book Lacey and Gail released a couple of years ago. As much as I love the recipes I do not require them in duplicate.

The recipes are wonderful, but I am disappointed in the fact that no where in the online book description was it written that the books were the same, simply with different titles and covers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Guaranteed to be delicious, August 20, 2008

I have been a vegan for six months now and this book changed everything! Before this cookbook, I rarely enjoyed cooking. So many times I would try a new recipe, spend a lot of time preparing it and it would turn out to be a disappointment. Not with these recipes. Every recipe I have tried has been outstanding. I have even started trying new recipes with guests because I am confident that it will turn out fabulous. My husband isn't vegan, yet he eats vegan with me whenever I make something from this cookbook. Needless to say, this book has changed the way we eat as a couple. No more making two versions of a dish because the vegan dish isn't flavorful or filling enough for him.

These recipes do take a lot of time to prepare, but they are worth every minute. They use some unusual ingredients, but I have had no trouble finding most of them. Also, almost all of these ingredients are "staples" and used throughout the recipes, so I'm not buying one item for just one recipe.

I believe the greatest testament to veganism is a delicious vegan meal. The recipes made from this book are more effective than any verbal diatribe against meat.

5.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable Book, March 25, 2009

I have been vegan for about five years now and often look for recipes that will allow me to create things that my four children and wife will eat. They aren't vegan and often turn their nose up at my tofu creations from other books. However, every recipe I've tried from this book has been a hit. I even took the Tiramisu (pg 190) made with the vanilla cake (pg 187) to my mother in laws house. I often take vegan dishes there and return with them almost in tact, as most people there tend to want their meat. However, this was devoured by everyone except my brother in law who detests coffee.

The tofu scrambles on page 38 are very nice as well, and have quickly replaced scrambled eggs for many in the house, which thrills me to no end. I have noticed some errors in editing, for instance on the page with the scrambles it tells you to see a chef's tip on page 95. You turn to page 95 and there is no tip. It's an introductoin to to the chapter for sandwhiches and wraps. You find the tip it's wanting you to find on page 100.

It's hard finding vegan dishes that taste good, so I was skeptical when I bought this book. Right off the bat I made the Chickpea salad, I didn't add the Dulse, but I did everything else, amazing!!! Next I tried the banana bread. I warned my husband that this may taste like cardboard, but to our surprise it was amazing! I couldn't keep his hands off it! This cookbook never fails to surprise me! I highly recommend this one!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Down To Earth, August 9, 2008
This review is from: You Won't Believe It's Vegan!: 200 Recipes for Simple and Delicious Animal-Free Cuisine (Paperback)
For all of you New Jeresyians who are still mourning the loss of Down Earth, weep no more. Lacey Sher and Gail Doherty were the owners of Red Bank NJ's famous vegan eatery, and this book contains the recipes to all of their delicious menu items. Chickpea Socca, Blue Corn Hempeh, Southern Style Setian, their famous Three Bean Chili Potato Skins and even the beloved Love Bowl are all here! The recipes in this book will take you from breakfast thru dessert with all the stops in between -- lunch, dinner, snacks, and even beverages. These recipes are sure to satisfy everyone, vegan or otherwise!

Can't say enough about this- the cornbread recipe is the best I've ever had. My non vegan friends now use this recipe because it is so easy to make. Ditto for the chocolate cake and pancake recipe.

The title is not so great but after using this book and buying a few copies for others i have to agree- you won't believe some of these things are vegan.

excellent book- really.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Cookbook, worth the investment!, October 28, 2009
This review is from: You Won't Believe It's Vegan!: 200 Recipes for Simple and Delicious Animal-Free Cuisine (Paperback)
This is a great cookbook that has awesome recipes that make me excited to cook. I like that it has some basic things like a seitan recipe that really is easy to make. Also it tells you how to make tempeh bacon, sausage patties and other good basics. Some of the recipes are so good, I just want to make them over and over- like the Gado Gado salad! I never thought I could love a salad so much, but it is truly addictive. I use this cookbook a lot, the only reason I took off one star is because it contains a few recipes that require things like a juicer, or a dehydrator, which I don't have. It also uses maple syrup as a sugar substitute regularly, which I realize is healthier, but can be quite expensive. All of this considered, it is a great cookbook and I still would highly recommend.

2.0 out of 5 stars You won't believe it's good! (because it isn't), February 7, 2011
This review is from: You Won't Believe It's Vegan!: 200 Recipes for Simple and Delicious Animal-Free Cuisine (Paperback)
Since I've become vegan about 4 months ago, I've checked out a number of vegan recipe books from the library. This one is the first disappointment. I am not a fan of these wannabe meat products, so I scoured the book for an entree to make for dinner that was made of just natural real foods, and unfortunately, there were very few. Of the few, I chose to make the Potato Gnocchi. It sounded good and simple and it included one of my favorite things, rosemary :) So I made it for dinner for my mom and my boyfriend and I was so ashamed to feed them such a gross dish (I take a lot of pride in my cooking). My boyfriend is a wonderful pig so he'll eat just about anything without complaining but my mom and I were severely disgusted. It didn't taste like rosemary at all, or even potato. All it really tasted like is flour :( I was so disappointed that I decided to return the book to the library without trying any more recipes.

On a related note, I have really enjoyed the books Vegan Cookies Invade your Cookie Jar and The Kind Diet. I just had to end my review on a positive note :)

Wow, I am so happy to have found this cookbook. I used to dine at the Down to Earth restaurant in Red Bank and was so sad when they closed their doors because I loved the fresh and delicious cuisine.
Now I get all the fantastic food in my own home! The recipes are easy to follow and taste just like I remembered in Red Bank; healthy, filling and very nutritious. My favorites are the Earth burger and the Magic Cookies!
I can't wait to make the cheesecake next!!

5.0 out of 5 stars VegNews Magazine Review, April 19, 2010
This review is from: You Won't Believe It's Vegan!: 200 Recipes for Simple and Delicious Animal-Free Cuisine (Paperback)
Authors Lacey Sher and Gail Doherty may have given up careers as restaurateurs--together the duo owned and operated New Jersey's first organic vegan restaurant, Down to Earth--but they haven't relinquished the idea of delivering tasty plant-based fare to the masses. With You Won't Believe It's Vegan, the team sets out to affirm that eating vegan means eating "more than salad," and succeeds with recipes running the gamut from Tortilla Torte with Creamy Pumpkin-Seed Pesto and Michelle's Blueberry Sour Cream Coffee Cake, to comfort-food classics like Slow-Cooked Scalloped Potatoes and Split Pea Soup. Planning a party? First-time hosts and hostesses will find the appetizers section a godsend, with offerings fit for a Super Bowl Party (Tofu Hot Wings) or a Chinese New Year gathering (Scallion Pancakes with Plum Dipping Sauce). Also advantageous to novice cooks are the sections on kitchen accoutrement must-haves and the glossary of pantry items, and the small-but-luscious collection of photos will have pros and neophytes alike making a dash for the kitchen.
