Spanning the years 1960-1963, You Won't Forget Me comprises the A- and B-sides of her first dozen Liberty 45s, all presented in their glorious original mono mixes. Highlights include Jackie's stunning original versions of Needles And Pins and When You Walk In The Room, both of which were successfully covered by the Searchers, helping spark the folk-rock movement.
Working with producers and arrangers of the caliber of Snuff Garrett, Clyde Otis, Dick Glasser and Jack Nitzsche, she recorded in a variety of other styles that ranged from folk (500 Miles) and R&B (I'll Drown In My Own Tears) to country (Faded Love) and gospel (Oh, Sweet Chariot), but the stand-out songs are those Jackie penned herself, frequently with co-writer Sharon Sheeley.

I knew she was one of the great singers of the 1960's, but I had no idea until I bought this CD, mainly to get "Needles and Pins" and "When you Walk in the Room", but I found a lot of the other songs slowly but surely growing on me. I can listen to this CD almost every morning on my computer at work and enjoy it every time.

If Jackie DeShannon had only recorded these 26 singles on the Liberty label and had never released her famous Burt Bacharach cover "What the World Needs Now is Love," she would still be one of my favorite vocalists and songwriters. Everything here is very good and much of it is exceptional. There are terrific ballads ("You Won't Forget Me," "Heaven is Being with You"), playful rockers ("Lonely Girl" and "Baby (When Ya Kiss Me)"), an excellent Ray Charles cover ("Ain't That Love"), and an outstanding song written for Jackie by a young Randy Newman, "Did He Call Today, Mama?" Two traditional songs, "500 Miles" and "Oh, Sweet Chariot" (expertly arranged by Jackie), and one contemporary song, "Little Yellow Roses," add a touch of folk and gospel, both areas where she excels. "Needles and Pins" and "When You Walk in the Room," the great folk-influenced pop singles, should be familiar to everyone. The gorgeously wistful pop ballad "I Won't Turn You Down" and the catchy "The Prince" should have been No. 1 hits while the breezy "Just Like in the Movies" (written with her talented songwriting partner Sharon Sheeley) is pure charm. The production values are high, with some lively orchestrations. The liner notes are very interesting.

If you're looking for 1 Jackie DeShannon disc to buy, then this is it! You'll be surprised if you've never heard her. This gives you a very good idea of her pop/rock girl group sound from before 1965. The one track I fell in love with was "I won't turn you down", which I preceded to listen to some 20 times in a row. Ace had room for more songs on here, and I wish they would have put them on. They said earlier tracks were from a different time period, but one wouldn't mind having them on here- being there was room. Packaging is great as usual, nice 20 page booklet. If you like this, which I'm sure you will if you're into this pop/rock sound, then check these discs out by Jackie also: 1) Breakin'it up on the Beatles tour!; 2) Don't turn your back on me/This is Jackie DeShannon; 3)Are you ready for this?; 4) and Jackie De Shannon- The Definitive Collection. The last being the best over all greatest hits package I've heard, you won't be disappointed. Jackie had a great feel for her early material, and she wrote a lot of her own songs at a time when women just didn't do that kind of thing. Definitely gave her a leg up, and what a nice pair she has on this cover!
