Serious bummers have been a hallmark of the You Wouldn’t Want To . . . series since it began in 2001. With a trademark blend of zany cartoon illustration and unmitigated disaster, these books have elucidated why being a Roman gladiator sucked and how being on the Titanic was no fun at all. Salem Witch! casts the reader as Priscilla Bishop, a 1692 Salem, Massachusetts, girl watching her town kill itself over supposed witchcraft. The spastic art and warring blocks of text gum up the lessons somewhat, but such bewildering details as the urine-soaked “witch cake” fed to truth-telling dogs make it worth it. With its continued procession of terrified, deranged, and doomed protagonists, this is one series that deserves to keep bumming us out. Grades 3-5. --Daniel Kraus

My middle school students love to browse through the books in this series in much the same way they browse through the Guinness World Book of Records. The format of these books makes them especially appealing to my reluctant readers. While certainly not a complete or scholarly overview, these books are great jump-off points and interest generators.

Jose and his brothers cause a huge bounty of pumpkins to grow in the town by accident, but have the great moral character to help the townspeople harvest without seeking praise. Wonderful story and vibrant illustrations!
