She shares her secrets with young readers everywhere,
By Midwest Book Review (Oregon, WI USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: You Can Write A Story (Spiral-bound)
Author Lisa Bullard has taught thousands of students about story-writing as part of a "Writers & Artists in the Schools" program; now, she shares her secrets with young readers everywhere in You Can Write a Story!, a spiral-bound how-to writing guide for novice writers in the style of a cookbook, peppered with useful tips and charming color illustrations by artist Deborah Haley Melmon. "It is a great idea to put a problem into the beginning. Starting with a problem makes the reader pay attention. Here's how my story might start with a problem: 'Pete the polar bear didn't have any friends. The Arctic animals laughed at him because he was purple.'" Step-by-step instructions, and an example story seen through to completion form the heart of this creative guide, enthusiastically recommended for elementary, grade-school, and public libraries.

Two Thumbs Up,
By Reader from Rice Lake (Rice Lake, WI USA) - See all my reviews

Teachers and parents will shout Hallelujah! for this book because it makes writing fun and a child can succeed no matter their level of skill. Author Lisa Bullard has an enthusiastic, clear approach to the writing process, most likely because she's been working with kids in classrooms, observing their questions, challenges, and stoppers. Deborah Melmon's illustrations will attract individual children who are being homeschooled or whose parents would like to provide good writing tools. Designed for first through third graders, the illustrations aren't babyish--older children (and some adults I've showed it to) will enjoy the step-by-step recipe-for-writing style of this book. And the very best part is the payoff. Bullard kindly provides a story at the end of the book which shows the outcomes. Well done.

My children, ages 9 and 10, have hated writing UNTIL we started this book!
They are working on their story as I type this and are really, really happy about what they are coming up with. I highly recommend this book if your child says; "I can never come up with a good story. I am not good at this. Do I have to write a story. Etc." THIS BOOK IS WONDERFUL! |
