Editorial Reviews

If Beck were a decade or so younger and had grown up more heavily immersed in hip-hop, his debut album likely would have sounded much like Astronautalis' You and Yer Good Ideas. Although his delivery tends to be slightly marble-mouthed, Astronautalis is definitely a rapper who sings the occasional chorus, as opposed to a singer who dabbles in rap. The settings on You and Yer Good Ideas, however, are uniformly lo-fi indie rock: acoustic guitars, wheezing harmoniums, weedy little vintage rhythm boxes, and tape hiss so prominent that it counts as an instrument are the basis of most of these songs. The songs themselves are as mellow as Teenage Fanclub and Modest Mouse getting together to jam on their favorite Neil Young songs, rarely raising much beyond a stoned mid-tempo wander. The combination perhaps doesn't seem like it should work, but most of You and Yer Good Ideas is entertaining in a low-key, lackadaisical way. Particular highlight: the shaggy dog tale "Somethin' for the Kids." -All Music Guide

5.0 out of 5 stars Stop biting your fingernails - and order this, dang it!, July 21, 2005

So once the digital laser needle hits this platter it's like you are transplanted into a mind that speaks so poetic it hurts. Astronautalis brings so much creativity to the table it makes you want to fold under the pressure. At the same time, you feel blessed to witness such an intriguifying (<new word) act. If you have ever had the chance to peep someone trying to freestyle at a club...it's best you try it again at one of Astronautalis' shows. He brings so much character and learned information to the game that you might as well just listen and learn rather than critique and misunderstand. This album is a culmination of the ever-present spirit and dedication Astro has always released at his many shows. The above album should appeal to the well-versed hip-hop backpacker along with the indie emo rock introvert. Words slide of this man's tongue without hesitation and with such precise cadence. It's really one of those albums you will definitely kick yourself in the pants if you don't grab it while it's hot...So, stop looking for the hot pads and just fork over the skrill...nahmean?

Mixing skater punks and hip hop has always been dangerous, but now they figured out a sense of timing; this spells certain doom for the rest of us. Astronautalis is the kind of rapper who steals the good off of every hip genre in town. Mix three parts indie rock, four parts hip hop, the fattest beats this side if the street, and you have almost come up with astronautalis's ingenius scheme of world domination through music. I relly like when you raped at my birthday party! Then we got to listen to your cd seven times. Remember when your friend Sam barfed on my new bike? That was funny and then you freestyle raped about it. Thanks for coming over and selling your cd to all my friends. I hope you get to be on MTV with all the pretty girls and other rapers. Come hang with us when you get back from your tour. This is the best rap album out!
