Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

YA Dog lovers will get a lot of pleasure as well as practical information on the proper care of their pets from this book. Taylor covers dog anatomy, origins of the dog, types of breeds, and the many facets of keeping a dog healthy and happy. Lavishly illustrated with color plates, clear diagrams, charts, and black-and-white photos.

From Library Journal

LC 85-23063. ISBN 0-394-72983-8. ea vol: Knopf. 1986. 288p. illus., some color. index. pap. $9.95. ref/pets Colorful, inviting, and hard to put down, these are among the most informative, attractive cat and dog books every published. Packed with encyclopedic amounts of information in an enticing format and drawn together by original, high-quality color photography and drawings, these gems will be adored by all ages. In both, Taylor discusses anatomy, feeding, grooming, showing, and training. He also offers sound advice on health care, emergency first aid, and pet selection. There are two drawbacks to these otherwise outstanding books. Information on specific breeds is overly abbreviated, opinionated, and sometimes incorrect. Secondly, the books are liable to be so popular that they will almost certainly need rebinding, which will be difficult with such narrow margins. Too bad they aren't available in hardback. Well written, abundantly and beautifully illustrated, and a great buy, both are highly recommended for school and public libraries. Larger libraries will want multiple copies. Another release in the series is Dick Mills's You & Your Aquarium .Ed . Carolyn I. Alexander, USACDEC Technical Information Ctr., Ft. Ord., Cal.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must-have book, April 28, 2002

This book is outstanding. Buying any other book on dog care -- except for professional literature -- is a waste of money.(Ditto for his cat care book).

This book has been translated into lots of languages (including Hebrew), which comes as no surprise. I think I have given more than 2 dozen copies of this book away to everyone from families, children and first time pet owners to veterinarians, zoology students and other professionals.

As a animal welfare professional with an extensive library, this is the book I turn to first -- and often don't have to look any further.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Dog, Good Dog Book, September 21, 2002
This review is from: You and Your Dog (Paperback)
I bought this when I acquired my first dog ten years ago. It has been pretty indispensable and unbarkably good. OK, so I didn't refer to it each of those ten years, but for people and kids and families just welcoming or planning to welcome a dog into their family, this is a good all-in-one book.

It has a section on different breeds to help match up your choice with your lifestyle/personality. It has a section on how to pick out a puppy. A picturesque, simplified, step-by-step guide to training the basics, a little first aid, and everything in between. For a comprehensive all-in-one book this one can't be beat. If you want to go deeper into home treatment, or advanced behavioral training, I would suggest you augment.

Ten years ago I bought this book and a Yellow Lab/Golden Retriever mix, Hamlet. He passed away today and was the most phenomenal dog around. I'd like to attribute part of that to this book, but I'd have to say he'd have probably been the same regardless of David Taylor's excellent book. It did help along the way though. I'll be picking it up again to do some puppy hunting in some month's time. 5 barks from me. Woof, woof, woof, woof, and...WOOF!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent general guide for families with a dog., July 16, 1998

This review is from: You and Your Dog (Paperback)
A consise discussion of breeds, care, preventative health, and health problems. The author has also done an equivalent work for cats "You & Your Cat", just as good. Only a vet will need more information than you find here, and after scoping out the pets section at our local Borders (the flagship store in Ann Arbor MI), we chose the cat version of this book. The dog version is just as good.
