5.0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended as a gift for young people with family members in the service, April 15, 2009
This review is from: You and Your Military Hero: Building Positive Thinking Skills During Your Hero's Deployment (Paperback)
Written by a team of experts in psychology, counseling, speech/language pathology, and special education, You and Your Military Hero: Building Positive Thinking Skills During Your Hero's Deployment is a consumable activity book created especially for children of military families. Designed to teach young people positive coping skills while a loved one is deployed in service to America, You and Your Military Hero is an excellent resource for family members to share. Some of the offered activities include ways to feel good like talking to someone the child trusts (a space is provided for the child to draw pictures or write names), a cooperative team game with "flipp" cards that can be cut out with scissors, a world map where the child can mark the location of his STAR (Someone To Always Remember) hero, and much more. Black-and-white illustrations of a friendly cartoon dog help endear this invaluable book, highly recommended as a gift for young people with family members in the service.

5.0 out of 5 stars A valuable resource for our military families!, October 12, 2009
By
This review is from: You and Your Military Hero: Building Positive Thinking Skills During Your Hero's Deployment (Paperback)
Hundreds of thousands of US military members have been continuously deployed overseas for the past several years. A large number of them are serving, or will soon serve on their third, fourth, or even fifth deployment to Iraq or Afghanistan. As a result, many experts fear that our armed forces are being stretched to the breaking point. Due to this vastly increased level of overseas operations, our military families are increasingly being left to fend for themselves while their loved ones spend long periods of time away from home. While the military does a great job of getting its soldiers, airmen, and Marines ready to do their jobs while deployed; they do a less thorough job of preparing the family members they leave behind. It has become clear that the children of our deployed military members are paying an especially heavy price for this fact. Department of Defense statistics indicate that mental health visits by the children of military members has nearly doubled since the first Iraq War.

Sara Jensen-Fritz, Paula Jones-Johnson, Thea L. Zitzow--co-authors of "You and Your Military Hero"--have come up with an extremely valuable resource for those facing the absence of deployed loved ones. The book provides a series of games, calendars, cutouts, discussion topics, and exercises designed to encourage awareness, understanding, and to develop coping mechanisms. By following the book's activities and suggestions, the children of our "military heroes" will learn to come to grips with their feelings and develop ways to handle the stress of family separation. Although the book is geared largely for children and is narrated by Flipp--a friendly dog, who makes this a fun and entertaining experience--"You and Your Military Hero" is not solely for the kids. Adult family members will also be able to strengthen their coping skills. The breathing and meditation techniques outlined--to give just one example--would certainly benefit readers of all ages.

Endorsed by the national Military Family Association, the Military Child Education Coalition, and the founder of the National Association of School Psychologist's Military Families Interest Group, "You and Your Military Hero" is truly a valuable resource for our military families. Highly recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Book Long Overdue, March 31, 2009
This review is from: You and Your Military Hero: Building Positive Thinking Skills During Your Hero's Deployment (Paperback)
This is an outstanding workbook for children of a deployed military family member. It's clear, concise, friendly and colorful. Children (I'm thinking up to about the age of 13) will enjoy doing the exercises, and should benefit from what I call art therapy, a direct path toward obtaining perspective for one's feelings through the practice of art, in this case writing, coloring, drawing, etc. The book, written by three teachers with many years experience working with children, should help kids identify their feelings. This, in turn, should give custodial parents or adult caretakers a sense of where to focus needed attention.

I believe portions of this book could even be used to help children of broken homes, perhaps due to abandonment, death or divorce. Every year, tens of thousands of kids deal with estrangement from a loved one, whether that be a parent or sibling or whoever. This book goes a long way toward helping those kids find peace by channeling their energies in positive ways. All three authors should be proud of their achievement.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Activity Book!, December 30, 2011
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: You and Your Military Hero: Building Positive Thinking Skills During Your Hero's Deployment (Paperback)
I am a counselor working with military children and families, and this book has been absolutely wonderful! I recommend it to my families and use it frequently with the children I work with (elementary school-aged kids). Great activities, we use them for our deployment groups all the time. The kids love the activities with "Flipp" the puppy. So happy to have another resource!
