4.0 out of 5 stars There is a whole lot here
This is a lot of material and different musical styles. The quality of the music runs from pedestrian to fantastic. Unless you are a big fan, you won't want all of this. He was kind of boring. Kind of like if you have heard one of his songs, you have heard them all. The biggest suprise is on the last disk. A whole helping of him covering Wynn Stewart and Merle...

2.0 out of 5 stars Mildly Pleasant & Completely Forgettable
George Hamilton IV is a minor talent who sounds like Ricky Nelson. In this set of six discs which ranges from awful to pretty good you get some hillbillyish novelty numbers, some rockabilly, some folk, some country, and a lot of pop. There is no more than one disc of material that is worth listening to even once. Hamilton was at his best on more up-tempo numbers, but...

Kind of like if you have heard one of his songs, you have heard them all. The biggest suprise is on the last disk. A whole helping of him covering Wynn Stewart and Merle Haggard, and then a helping of live sets from the opry. You won't be upset if you get this, but this is a lot of material to digest.

5.0 out of 5 stars A nice surprise for most people I would think, September 2, 2009
This guy is pleasant pleasant pleasant, another Bill Anderson I could say. Truthfully he recorded a lot of songs that he could have left on the shelf, but so did a lot of other artists. Bear Family give you EVERYTHING and are the leaders in what they do, so you get EVERYTHING, and I am a completest and I am happy with the set.

5.0 out of 5 stars Complete anthology 1956-65, June 16, 2001

All George's work from his best days (1956-65) is present in this box. A few oddities like early interview, demo and radio performance. The cd is edited by Bear Company, which garantees best quality and information. Beautiful book with lots of pics) added.

2.0 out of 5 stars Mildly Pleasant & Completely Forgettable, September 7, 2010
George Hamilton IV is a minor talent who sounds like Ricky Nelson. In this set of six discs which ranges from awful to pretty good you get some hillbillyish novelty numbers, some rockabilly, some folk, some country, and a lot of pop. There is no more than one disc of material that is worth listening to even once. Hamilton was at his best on more up-tempo numbers, but sadly, there are very few of these after the second disc (the strongest in the set by far). Song after song finds him at a metronomic slowish tempo where his lack of range and non-existant phrasing means one mildly pleasant and completely forgettable song after another. Oddly enough, the instrumental arrangements of these songs are interesting and varied, but vocally they are a pile of stale rice cakes. Yes, Hamilton's biggest hit, Abilene, is one of these stale rice cakes.

The sound quality of this set is excellent. The booklet, as with every Bear Family set I've seen, is very nice.

This set was in my collection for about two weeks which was the time it took me to listen to it. I would pay for lossless downloads of fifteen or twenty of the tracks from this set, but the good just isn't that good and the bad is too plentiful for it to have a place on my shelf.

1.0 out of 5 stars What songs are on the CD?, April 12, 2000
By A Customer
I love several of the old GH IV songs: Take My Hand for a While; Big Steel Rails; Get the Urge for Goin'. But don't know whether these are included in the box set. I'd kind of like to know what's included for 130 bucks! Amazon, please provide play list. Thanks
