5.0 out of 5 stars Zoot Sims and Al Cohn - A Great Tenor Duo, January 6, 2003
This review is from: You 'n' Me (Audio CD)
Zoot Sims and Al Cohn shine on this studio set recorded in 1960, featuring standards and originals. They're joined by a young Mose Allison on piano, Major Holley on bass and Osie Johnson on drums. Among the highlights on the CD are the two Cole Porter standards, "You'd Be So NiceTo Come Home To" and "Love For Sale", along with a bass and mumbles solo on Angel Eyes, accompanied by Zoot and Al on their clarinets. Sims and Cohn are among the great tenor duos in jazz history and this CD, along with their other recorded works together, is valuable to sax players and fans alike. The length is a bit short by CD standards, but the playing is tremendous.

5.0 out of 5 stars Saxophone Giants!, September 15, 2009
This review is from: You 'n' Me (Audio CD)
The late 50's were really a good time for Al & Zoot. This represents their studio work in the summer of 1960. In person, they were really something to see. They could get your attention from note one, and keep you rivited to your seat and the music the whole night!

"The Opener", a Bill Potts tune still gives me a rush every time I hear it - just great playing all around. Major Holly shines on "Angel Eyes" with a clarinet back drop. The groove and solo work on "You'd Be So" is timeless. Cole Porter himself would approve. When I go back and listen to Mose Allisons' work with these tenor giants, I appreciate him much more now - don't know why. Check out his simple brilliance on "Love For Sale." He had an instant recognizable sound and style.

It would be 13 years until this TENOR DUO would record again. Savor this one. I've seen Al Cohn & Zoot Sims several times at the "Half-Note." I will never forget Zoot playing "Autumn Leaves" on request for me one night. He was a class act. This will probably remain my personal favorite recording of these men, because it brings back my youth when I first heard it. Man, I miss them!
