Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

*Starred Review* This entry in the Great Idea series offers a fresh topic and handles it extremely well. Kids are no strangers to YouTube, but they may not know much about how it works or how it came to be. Woog’s account is interesting and informative and written in simple yet uncondescending prose that’s spot-on for the intended audience. The book begins with a brief history of video sharing on the Web and then goes on to discuss the three young men who came up with the idea for YouTube after working together at PayPal, and what getting the start-up off the ground entailed. Details of how the site works (and makes money) are explained, as are questions of copyright and censorship. The up-to-date text (at least for now) discusses a number of recent ways YouTube has changed society, including its effect on the 2008 election. The attractive design features full-color photographs, while fast facts appear throughout the narrative in eye-catching sidebars. A glossary and a short (yet pertinent) list of sources round out the appealing treatment. Grades 4-6. --Ilene Cooper

5.0 out of 5 stars Written and designed for young readers grades 3 to 6, September 22, 2009
This review is from: YouTube (Great Idea) (Library Binding)
Our modern world was created, shaped, influenced, and made possible by innovative inventions arising from the minds of their creators. "A Great Idea" is an eleven volume series from Norwood House Press that showcases contemporary advances in technology that make unique contributions to modern life. This outstanding series now has four new additions. "The Bionic Hand" focuses upon the development and creation of the 'i-limb' which is the first commercially available bionic hand. "The Nexi Robot" showcases four small humanoid robots with mobility, dexterity, and communication skills. "The Seed Vault" was created to preserve plant seeds as a way of protecting and insuring the world's food supply against natural disasters and diseases. "Sunscreen For Plants" is the story of a new SPF 45 spray that can be applied to food crops to insure against sun damage and dehydration. Each of these superbly illustrated, 48-page, library bound titles is enhanced with the inclusion of a glossary, 'places to go' information, and an index. The previously published titles in this impressively produced and highly recommended series include "Home Windmills"; "Hybrid Cars"; "Recycled Tires"; "Water From Air: Water Harvesting Machines"; "The Jaws Of Life"; "Lego Toys"; and "YouTube". Written and designed for young readers grades 3 to 6, 'The Great Idea' series titles are available individually, but school and community libraries are well advised to acquire the entire eleven volume series.

5.0 out of 5 stars You might just be the next Numa Numa guy on YouTube!, April 8, 2009
This review is from: YouTube (Great Idea) (Library Binding)
If you are between the ages of twelve and seventeen, you have probably spent quite a bit of time looking at the videos on YouTube. In fact this age group is their primary audience. Some of the most interesting things in the world of technology start with a few people brainstorming. Chad Hurley, Steve Chen and Jawed Karim were three guys who had an idea about creating a "virtual vision" where people could share their videos.

At first they were considering limiting the content, but then decided to say something like what the heck, let's do it all! From their small beginnings they ended up being the "most popular video-sharing site" on the internet. Did you know YouTube has been banned in some countries? Were you aware that there are about seventy thousand clips added every day? You may find some very interesting tidbits you may not have known about when you read this book.

This was a fun and interesting book to read and I enjoyed finding out about the founders and how they started YouTube. It's not a lengthy book, but is well written and concise. Many people have become virtual stars almost over night. Remember the Numa Numa guy? If you have some hidden talent, you could become `the someone' we'll want to watch next week!
