In this age of technology, it is nice to have other people do the research and put down on pages the information we need in a plain and simple way that we can understand. This is a step-by-step book anyone can follow and gives great insight as to how to use YouTube for education.
I bought this book hoping that I would get some fresh ideas for my classroom. I use technology (especially YouTube) frequently and am always open to new ideas. Unfortunately this book offers little that anyone familiar with the website won't already be aware of.
Firstly, out of the 230 pages of actual text I didn't read anything of interest until page 119. The first few chapters go over things like how to navigate the website, how to create and account, view videos, etc. I suppose this is nice for people who are new to the internet but I think by now it is unnecessary and seems to only be there to pad the book. I mean really, YouTube is not complicated and even the most technologically illiterate people out there can figure it out faster than they can read this book. Besides these ridiculous chapters the one that made me almost fall out of my chair was a whole chapter dedicated to setting up the sound and video playback, going so far as to include pictures of how to adjust the volume ON YOUR COMPUTER. Who doesn't know how to do this?
The chapter on copyright is nice if you are curious about law but the authors mention it so much that it makes the reader feel that if they accidentally show copyrighted material the FBI is going to break down their door and haul them off to jail. I understand that it's important but following copyright law doesn't need to be mentioned every few pages.
Once I got through the fluff I was excited to get into the chapters on the many different ways to use videos in my classroom. Unfortunately most of what I encountered I was already familiar with and I'm sure most other people are too. The "teaching strategies" throughout the book are hit or miss, usually leaving a lot to be desired. I hardly think that "play this video to familiarize your students with the song" is a teaching strategy that needs to be printed. That's like saying "have students warm-up on their instruments before performing".
The printing of the book is just bad. The authors include pictures of videos that, when printed in black and white, look like nothing but ink spills on the page. What is the point of including a picture of a video anyways? Also, the authors should have realized that if you are going to print a book in black and white you should not have text printed over shaded areas. All the teaching strategy boxes are printed so dark you can hardly read the text.
Overall this book is simply in need of a desperate overhaul. It was published in 2009 and since then a lot has changed not only on YouTube but in the way people use and experience the internet. If you are going to venture into the world of technology you have to be aware of the fact that it is a fast paced field that requires you to constantly update your materials in order to stay relevant. I
If you have never used YouTube, buy this book. If you have used it before, this book will most likely offer you nothing of significance.
