5.0 out of 5 stars Great texas hold'em game. Different then the rest.
I would like to say this is a very fun Texas hold 'em poker game. The other reviewer must have never played texas hold'em before, as the odds are fine, its how you read the computer opponents and play your cards. This game is different than the rest because you use your money to purchase building and towns, and you can even wager the buildings in cash games, which comes...

1.0 out of 5 stars No XP install; no support
I tried to install GOP on three different XP (SP3) PCs with no luck. Contacted company for help and although they did get back to me their LAME suggestion was to get support from Amazon. Error message I received each time I tried to run was that there was a problem with the RWG file: GOP RWG file has encountered an error and needs to close. Out of curiosity, I installed...

The last time I really enjoyed a poker game, was playing Poker Academy online. The alternative currency - PAX - gave players a realistic comparison tool, without having to spend real money.

For a long time, I've been seeking a poker game with a deeper story line; something beyond just cards. This game fits the bill perfectly. Accumulating money, then real estate, and then towns, allows you qualify in higher stakes games with more talented players from neighboring towns.

I own three towns currently, but I must warn you - this game is best played when your patience and interest is high. Otherwise, you can make careless decisions, which the opponents will be sure to capitalize on. When money runs too low to buy entry into tournaments or cash games, you'll then have to sell of property to free up some cash. In my experience, this game rewards somewhat conservative play. Whenever I get impatient and loosen up too frequently, I almost always pay a steep price. As I'm starting to work my way out of the nsighboring towns, I'm finding that players bluff mych more frequently, and are tougher opponents in general.

Far as suck-outs. Yes, they happen, but they work both ways. I've been on the receiving end of a few river cards. By no means, is this game unbeatable. It's challenging for sure, but if you play somewhat conservatively and avoid foolish decisions, placing in the money during tournaments isn't that hard.

For the price especially, you will never find a better poker game than Governor of Poker. It may not be high tech or overly fancy, but it keeps me interested. I can't recommend it highly enough.

Very difficult game to win. I rarely leave reviews even though I am usually very pleased with the products I buy from Amazon. But I need to say that this game could have been so much fun to play. The goal of the game is to win either regular poker games or tournament games and buy all the property of a particular town. Once you win enough tournaments or regular poker games, then you play a more difficult computer player to win a mode of transportation to go to another town. I love the concept of playing poker with this type of goal in mind. However, it is very, very difficult to win any of the games. No matter which mode I play (easy, medium, or difficult), I rarely win a hand. I have counted 17 consecutive hands that I didn't even get a pair while the AI players were getting three of a kind, flushes, straights, and full houses. I used different strategies and still got the same results...constant lousy hands. Every once in a while I would finally get a pair, but usually lost to the computer player that had a 3 of a kind or better hand.

So, in fairness to the creators of this game...I will try to contact them to see if there is some sort of patch or strategy I am missing. If so, I will leave an updated review in the future. But after spending quite a few hours playing this game, I am pretty disappointed at the low odds of getting a decent hand (or even a pair) and most likely will not play it much more.

Edited Review:
I have had a chance to play this game again and I am changing my review. This is a challenging game and requires quite a bit more patience. I eventually won the game and have come to really enjoy it! So I give it 5 stars for creativity and fun! Just know that it's not always great hands and quick wins for you....you will have to work for it, but it will be a rewarding feeling once you win the final game!

I enjoy playing this game, but you have to be patient. You cannot jump in and expect to win right away. It is just like real texas hold em poker. You have to play the game. I have control of four towns and a lot of property, but you cannot rush, you have to have patience.

Great game for short interludes of 15 to 20 minutes. I love the cartoony fun graphics. Just plain easy to play but hard to win!I am addicted to this game!

Error message I received each time I tried to run was that there was a problem with the RWG file: GOP RWG file has encountered an error and needs to close. Out of curiosity, I installed onto my Win7 video production PC and it worked fine - but I only use that for video production - and I wanted GOP on my XP laptop.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Time Waster, January 29, 2012

If you're "bored to tears"; then this one's for you. Hours go by like minutes. Time flies. Better than Angry Birds. Much, much better than "counting flowers on the wall" to kill time.

I read a lot of the reviews before purchasing this game, and have been mostly happy with the game. You are a poker player who can play in tournaments or cash games in order to win money. You use the money to purchase buildings in a town. Once you buy all the buildings in the town, you own the town. You do this till you own the whole state. The AI is pretty decent. I have learned a lot about playing poker with this game. The only problem I have had is in some towns where I can't seem to figure out the strategy of some of the players. They bet heavily on every hand, whether it is weak or not and with even a conservative strategy, I will just get bled dry through the blinds. Maybe I was playing to conservative and do not understand the game enough. You also seem to have dry spells where you don't seem to win very much, just like real life. While it is frustrating, it is just like playing for real. I haven't beat the game yet, but do have fun playing.

A good game really. But you have to know how to play poker because you are not an automatic winner...the buying of property is a nice touch....and you can always go back to a town just to raise your reputation scale.
