When this song played at Justified's forth-season finale, I loved it so much that, even though I usually don't care for country music, I immediately downloaded the MP3.

Having heard the writer's own recording of the song, Darrell Scott from the 1997 album "Aloha from Nashville", I have been spoiled to others' versions of his songs. Patty Loveless and Brad Paisley both do tuneful versions, as one would expect with their caliber of talent. They both released their versions back in 2001. Dave Alvin here gives it more of a story song performance, spoken word reminiscence around a campfire, less of a slow hills ballad, with some smoke and gravel voice for texture.

Dave Alvin's rendition of this song is my favorite. Love that smoke and whiskey voice of his. If you like "story" songs, you'll love this one.

Am a HUGE Dave Alvin fan and a HUGE Justified fan...so imagine my excitement/suprise when they joined forces a few years ago for the great "Eleven Eleven" vintage two-fer of "Harlan County Line" and "Beautifull City Across the River"...which were both featured in the show. As it turns out, good as those two tunes are, Dave later mentioned that they weren't specificaly written for the show...he already had them in the can and they just happened to fit the bill...well Dave was specifically asked to do this tune (a cover) and the results are magnificent...Dave's slow drawl and smoldering guitar fit the material perfectly and the story song fits the show just as well...a marriage made in Kentucky Heaven if you ask me...this is the best $.99 you will ever spend...you can also check out a "making of" video of this song on youtube that is almost as interesting as the song itself...enjoy!
