5.0 out of 5 stars A great singer, with too little recognition., March 21, 2010

When I was eighteen, I loved to hear this man sing. Nat King Cole, Frankie Lane, and Mario Lanza were also favorites of mine during those young years. Sometime in the early nineties I found an album signed by Roy Hamilton, which later was misplaced after a couple of moves. I am so happy to have his songs again. I honor his memory and sigh sometimes, as I have over the years of wondering why so little acknowledegment. Yet, no lack of applause can ever truly belittle a good thing. (Actually, Frankie Laine did not get his due either; one had to have a certain look in those days, I suppose.) Nonetheless, I was much impressed.

I did take this CD over to my friend's house. She was there -when Roy H. was there- but she could not remember him. She really liked his voice and was quite conversational about having no recollection of him. It was so good to share the enjoyment. I cannot imagine anyone not liking this guy. I can still see myself humming along with the radio whenever he was singing. So, it was good to have such an opinion from someone with less nostalgia than myself.

We are really blessed to have such an open door to so many beautiful pieces. I can still listen to Roy Hamilton, and the fellows I mentioned above, even though they are gone while I am in this autumn of my own life. (Or, is it winter now...?) David Phelps is one of the present-day singers that lifts my heart with his songs. These singers are all different, but somewhere in their love for music, they are the same. These singers of songs enrich lives, and make many days brighter with their sounds. I think you will like this album.

5.0 out of 5 stars You'11 never walk alone, September 2, 2008

This review is from: You'll Never Walk Alone / Golden Boy (Audio CD)
I had heard Roy Hamilton first in 1957,sing the version of the song "You'll Never Walk Alone". After many years of trying to trace this version which I Believe inspired the version that Gerry Marsden's sang and had the hit many years later, and now the song is the anthem of Liverpool Football Club. This CD is superb in many ways and his style has been copied down the ages and his arrangements have been the source of hits for other singers.

5.0 out of 5 stars PLAY YOURSELF!, April 2, 2003
This review is from: You'll Never Walk Alone / Golden Boy (Audio CD)
Jazz sax great Lester Young once gave this advice to some prospective musicians about to participate in a competitive "cutting session" [musicians who challenged one another for bragging rights and jobs!]. "Ya' gotta be original Man, play yourself." Roy Hamilton died young but he was a boxer, discovered by a disc jockey, and his range was incredible. He sang gospell, show tunes, and blistering rock n roll and rhytm and blues. He sang his own way, no traing, but soulful like you can not come to know until you hear him, and then you still can't believe it-his buttery voice and his passion are out of sight. Buy anything of his you can lay your hands on.
