5.0 out of 5 stars Must-Read Asperger's Handbook, March 24, 2007

This review is from: Young Adults With Asperger's: A Handbook for Parents, Teachers, Supervisors and Co-workers (Paperback)
"Young Adults With Asperger's" by David A. Krug is a must-read handbook for anyone dealing professionally and/or personally with persons having Asperger's Disorder. It provides the reader with extremely useful information on the young adult population with Asperger's Disorder, since so few resources exist for dealing with this disorder in this age level and beyond. Through the inclusion of art work and writing by Taylor Crowe and Peter Krug, Dr. Krug makes his point that Asperger's adults can succeed in many areas and make very important contributions to society despite their limitations. Information in this handbook will help, in particular, parents in pursuing appropriate educational, social, and transitional job skills interventions when planning for the future of their young adult children. I highly recommend this enlightening and moving book.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best book to start with--wonderful, October 3, 2007
This review is from: Young Adults With Asperger's: A Handbook for Parents, Teachers, Supervisors and Co-workers (Paperback)
This is an excellent book.
Dr. Krug is both an expert in the field and the father of a young man with Asperger's syndrome (AS). His book is short enough so that people will read it, but it contains as much information as longer books. It's personal, authoritative, useful, insightful, practical, and concise all at once. It helps the reader understand AS. The examples from his son and a family friend give the book a personal angle.
Best of all, it gives practical coping strategies. Some of the strategies include: using timers to manage time, stress reduction routines, joining special interest groups to enhance social life, and making sure communications are explicit and concrete. But don't take it from me; read the book yourself.
In the past, people with Asperger's suffered from being different without knowing why. Books like this do more than explain the suffering, they help relieve it. There are other good books on AS, but start with this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Questions on Autism Answered, May 2, 2007

This review is from: Young Adults With Asperger's: A Handbook for Parents, Teachers, Supervisors and Co-workers (Paperback)
Before reading this book I had many questions about Autism. I have friends with children and young adults that are Autistic; I never understood the causes or what the families were dealing with. Now I have a much better understanding thanks to Dr. Krug's wonderful book "Young Adults With Asperger's. The stories by Peter Krug were heart warming and brought this reading to tears at time. Taylor Crowe's pictures were wonderful and opened my eyes to the fact that young adults with Asperger's are capable of doing much more then I ever imagined.

Thank you Dr. Krug, Peter Krug, and Taylor Crowe.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Insight!, April 11, 2007
This review is from: Young Adults With Asperger's: A Handbook for Parents, Teachers, Supervisors and Co-workers (Paperback)
Congratulations to Dr. Krug for providing a vehicle through which Peter and Taylor, two young men with ASD, can help us understand their disorder. It was especially salient to reflect upon their written thoughts and pictorial insight.

I have just begun to use this book with a group of adults with ASD and I have already received meaningful feedback, which has now become a way for me to elicit more insightful communication about having this disorder.

The pictures and text are written in the "same language" as those I see in therapy. As a matter of fact, one young adult with Asperger's commented, "that is exactly as I visualie it!"

I am grateful to Dr. Krug for seeing the need and providing this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars At last !! Some much needed answers, March 29, 2007

This review is from: Young Adults With Asperger's: A Handbook for Parents, Teachers, Supervisors and Co-workers (Paperback)
As a Speech and Language Pathologist with 35 years of experience in a public school setting, I was thrilled to read "Young Adults With Asperger's" by David A. Krug. I have always been challenged and fascinated by my autistic students, though I frequently wondered what happened in their lives after they left the high school setting. This handbook provided me with answers to my many questions. The beautiful original artwork and written descriptions of personal experiences and feelings by two young adults with Asperger's in this handbook were excellent and gave me more information than I have found in many textbooks or lectures. Topics such as High Functioning Autism vs. Asperger's Disorder (AD) and savant skills in AD were very accessible and understandable. I was particularly impressed with the information on employment and life skills that parents and teachers will find invaluable in transitional planning for AD students. I strongly recommend this book not only to all who would like to increase their knowledge of this very complex disorder but to those interested in achieving more success in their social interactions with individuals with Asperger's Disorder.
