Amazon.com Review

Batters up! A new addition to Dorling Kindersley's Young Enthusiast series, Ian Smyth's The Young Baseball Player will have your favorite Little Leaguer hitting home runs and stealing bases, Babe Ruth-style. Okay, maybe not. But with this elegantly designed, illustration-rich bevy of baseball basics, girls and boys can at least learn the ins and outs of throwing, catching, fielding, and pitching--all through elaborate photographic sequences. The short foreword by Cincinnati Reds powerhouse Eduardo Perez opens up to a brief history of baseball, then slides right into a discussion of what you'll need equipment-wise, how to warm up, the layout of a playing field, and the techniques a young ballplayer should use when the bases are loaded. Ambitious youngsters will find a brief "Taking It Further" section in the back, followed by a glossary, index, and list of useful baseball-related resources. This is a basic baseball primer for new players just getting their feet wet in the game. (Ages 6 and older) --Karin Snelson

From School Library Journal

Grade 4-6-Filled with beautifully-reproduced full-color photos, this title follows the familiar oversized format of the series. Brief chapters offer instruction on different aspects of the game mostly through captioned photographs. The inclusion of as many girls as boys in the illustrations is noteworthy. Smyth provides solid, basic information in an attractive format, but with the number of quality instructional titles already available for this age group, libraries may find this one superfluous. Don Geng's Fundamental Baseball (Lerner, 1995), Jerry Kasoff's Baseball Just for Kids (Grand Slam, 1996), and Peter Kreutzer's Little League's Official How-to-Play Baseball Handbook (Doubleday, 1990) all cover this topic more than adequately.

5.0 out of 5 stars A most have book for the young baseball player, June 4, 2001

This review is from: The Young Baseball Player: A Young Enthusiast's Guide to Baseball (Hardcover)
My 8 year old son loves this book. This book gives the history of baseball, rules of the game with diagrams and fabulous photographs of play by play action. I love that this book includes color photographs of girls and boys demonstrating plays to appeal to both genders. Also, my son and I are able to sit down and review basic play positions for batting and the field by looking at color photographs of step by step instructions. This book also includes warm up exercises, photographs of required baseball attire and equipment and demonstration of strategic plays.

This is a wonderful book to introduce baseball to kids!!
