Big Bill Broonzy was born William Lee Conley Broonzy in the tiny town of Scott, Mississippi, just across the river from Arkansas. During his childhood, Broonzy's family -- itinerant sharecroppers and the descendants of ex-slaves -- moved to Pine Bluff to work the fields there. Broonzy learned to play a cigar box fiddle from his uncle, and as a teenager, he played violin in local churches, ... Read more in Amazon's Big Bill Broonzy Store

Editorial Reviews

Product Description

Big Bill Broonzy probably had his biggest commercial success in the '50s, when he became the darling of the folk crowd. But his glory days as a musician were no doubt the late '20s and early '30s, when these exceptional sides were done. Broonzy was a guitarist of amazing ability, highly sought after as a sideman by his peers. He also did some superb solo work, and both facets are clearly evident here. "How Do You Want It Done?"--arguably his solo tour de force--is likely the earliest example of a rocking guitar boogie. "Long Tall Mama" and "Skoodle Do Do" show that his fingerpicking prowess was equally formidable. He was also a fine singer with a deep, rich tenor voice. The band sides include appearances by such great pianists as Black Bob and Georgia Tom Dorsey, as well as vocalist Jane Lucas. There are more than a few Broonzy albums available, but this fine collection may well be the most definitive. --Lars Gandil

4.0 out of 5 stars Solid Guitar Work November 2, 2000
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Although originally recorded in the 1930's .Big Bill Broonzy's music lives on through his influences on todays heros. This CD is a must for any serious acoustic blues musician & is the supplement to Woody Mann's Guitar Learning Video , Big Bill Broonzy .The Liner notes by the folks @ Yazoo Music are equally important & insightful .

5.0 out of 5 stars Important Early Work by a Major Bluesman March 5, 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Bill Broonzy was a powerful performer of the Delta Blues, and he later found a second career as a folk and blues singer for the liberal folk crowd in Chicago. I remember seeing him at a party when I was a teenager, and I've loved his music ever since. This CD and a second of his material from the twenties and thirties are important documents of Broonzy's work before he became a northern urban performer. Yazoo is a label specializing in rare folk, ethic and blues recordings from the period before the Second World War. Their remastering and notes are always more than excellent.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Album June 9, 2010
Format:Audio CD
This is truly an amazing collection. I've got a couple other Big Bill albums and I had the revelation the other day that Eagle Riding Papa is just about the same thing as the Bob Wills Light Crust Doughboys theme. There's excellent flat picking here, Mississippi River Blues is great. You aren't wasting your money here.

A great find. I grew up listening to the radio stations that played Blues at night, and I really miss the old time Blues.
