Fantastic!!!,
This review is from: The Young Birder's Guide to Birds of Eastern North America (Peterson Field Guide) (Paperback)
This is a great bird book for youngsters. It has excellent pictures, wonderful illustrations, and perfect age appropriate descriptions. Give this to your children and extend the life of your own bird books! My twin 4+ year olds love it and read it constantly on car rides. They have become especially fond of using the space provide for recording what species they have seen and where. They did realize there were species missing (the book covers the 200 most common) but understand why and have yet to see much that is not found in "their" bird book.
I highly recommend this book!

My son is 6 and we read this book together. The "gross" facts make it interesting for kids, especially boys. Even adults can learn from this book. It gives incentive for kids to get OUTSIDE!!!!

My daughter is nearly four and is always asking to look at our Peterson Field Guide to Eastern North American birds. Because she is so fascinated by the "grown-up" version, buying this "Young Birder's Guide" was a no-brainer.
She LOVES it. It's very similar in size to the "real" guide and is very informative, full of great pictures. Each page contains photographs of the bird as well as an artist's ink drawing. Sections for each bird usually include: - a picture of both male and female - "Look For" (a general description of the bird) - "Listen For" (the sound it makes) - "Remember" (a helpful note to make a correct identification) - "Wow!" (fun fact about the bird) - "Find It" (location and habitat info, along with a map) The book also includes sections at the beginning about how to get started in bird watching, helpful gear, as well as a section on the importance of conservation. This is a great book that I'm so pleased my daughter enjoys. If she likes it this much and she's not even four, I can't wait until she learns to read!

I bought this book to help me teach a birding class to adults with developmental disabilities. It was a great hit with them. The photos are clear and easily recognizable. The book is small, compact and can easily be placed in a pocket for traveling through fields and woods. It helped us find birds based on their habitats and offered 'fun facts' on each species. I'd recommend this book to anyone starting out on their first birding mission. =)

This is a more in depth look at birds, an actual guide. I have a 2 year old granddaughter and she can't get enough of birds. This book keeps her attention for a long time. I can see that she will use this book for many years to come. It has good photos and descriptions and details and offers enough information that can carry her further along in years. She can grow with it.

If you are considering a birding guide for a young person, this is a good choice. It contains essential info on the birds you are most likely to see and gives an interesting fact about each one. I recommend letting the child read for themselves. When they get proficient with these move onto an "adult" guidebook.
