4.0 out of 5 stars Original? No... Refreshing? Maybe... Good? Absolutely!!!
Maybe I shouldn't admit this, but I first heard the Subways on the O.C. on Fox. I wasn't quite sure what to make of them and since I can't stand the radio, the only way I could really find out if I liked the album was to buy it (I don't P2P and samples don't always give me enough information). Maybe I shouldn't admit this, but I first heard the Subways on the O.C. on Fox. I wasn't quite sure what to make of them and since I can't stand the radio, the only way I could really find out if I liked the album was to buy it (I don't P2P and samples don't always give me enough information). What I discovered was that the Subways are not original, but they are very entertaining. They fit very well into a playlist with bands like the Vines (who are one of my favorite bands) and The Von Bonies (certain songs on Pawn Shoppe Heart). Good pop mentality from the band without the trappings of a specific style like garage, punk, or alternative. They skirt the line well and I enjoy it.

I heard of this band from MTV2 of all places. Unlike most of the bands featured on that channel, they were not emo (yea Hawthorne Heights sucks and so does All American Rejects). They got some catchy tunes in the vein of the Pixies or Veruca Salt. I saw them live in Houston and that was an energetic show. I even felt compelled to sing along while I was sitting at the bar. I think i'm in love with the bass player Charlotte. She probably killed some brain cells from all her head banging. Yea, support this band, their like cool music from the nineties.

This album is an up beat rocker. It took awhile for their music to cross the pond from the UK but its here now and everyone should give them a chance. I would classify them as Indie Rock along the lines of Franz Ferdinand but they raise the bar with this great effort. Songs like Holiday, Rock and Roll Queen, Young for Eternity, and Somewhere all stand out as amazing tracks. They may not be the most original band but they certainly know how the take the best of what other bands have to offer and apply it to themselves. Pick it up and you wont be dissapointed.

The Subways have succeeded where many have failed: they've produced a record that lives up to their live performances. There's plenty of the energy that they exude on stage here and, for me, that's reason enough to pick it up. But there are plenty of other reasons to love this album, too: a big one being the fact that the band - a trio - are not lost in the recording. No gospel choir, string orchestra, didgeridoo ensemble or 100s of extra guitar tracks. Clean and simple, but still full and satisfying. Why don't more people make albums like this? I also like that I'm able to better appreciate the dual vocals recorded. Live, it was just fine, but I'm really able to hear how well they complement each other on this disc. The band have clearly learned (but not stolen) a lot from fellow Englishmen Oasis. "Mary" is a good example of this, but stops short of being a rip off or overly derivative. As a whole, Young For Eternity showcases the band's ability to craft really great rock 'n' roll: nicely structured, catchy, and dynamic. I can see this album appealing to a really broad range of music fans, so I definitely expect wide airplay when it arrives in stores. It's great stuff, a lot of fun, and totally worth the price of purchase or download.

5.0 out of 5 stars Band Of The Year, April 10, 2006

In 2005, the local radio station started playing the song "Rock And Roll Queen" by The Subways for the first time. At first, I thought they sounded like the Ceasers, but I quickly learned that this British band meant buisness, and they were INSANELY better than the Ceasers. Waiting for 3 months was hard, and I finally bought the English version on accident (what can I say, I couldn't wait an extra month for it to come out). The only difference, I believe, is that on the American version, the Encore At 1 AM is a separate song. I am uncertain, but I do know this:

the subways is my new favorite band. This CD is incredibly amazing and after listening to it mulitple times, I have grown to like it more and more. It's upbeat antics and slow refreshing tunes have more than astounded me and my taste in music. The three 19 year olds have surely made an impact in my life, and I HIGHLY encourage buying this CD

favorite tracks: I Want To Hear..., Holiday, Rock And Roll Queen, Mary, Lines Of Light, Oh Yeah, With You, She Sun, Somewhere, and At 1 AM

3.0 out of 5 stars Be My Little Rock & Roll Queen, February 18, 2006
This review is from: Young for Eternity (Audio CD)
The next band to cross the pond in hopes of American dominance is The Subways. And much like the original British Invasion, it seems like the band is going after the teenage girl demographic but instead of making their debut on the Ed Sullivan Show like the Beatles did in the sixties, in the new millennium The Subways instead introduced to themselves stateside to young girls everywhere via the soundtrack to The O.C. with the indie rocker Rock & Roll Queen. The band screamed and turned the guitars up and overpowered the other mope rock that has populating other bands on the soundtrack.

Now the band has finally released the first album on this side of the pond, Youth for Eternity. With the thrashing Rock & Roll, it's odd to here the album start with a folksy touch with the song I Want to Hear What You Got to Say, but the song quickly starts bouncing around sounding very similar to the Queens of the Stoned Age's No One Knows. The same bouncy cadence shows up again later on the album with Oh Yeah. The band quickly picks it up with the next song, Holiday with an opening riff that sounds very similar to Green Day's American Idiot. Um, is anyone noticing a trend?

Even though each song has a very distinctive style ranging from folk, to garage rock, to punk, each song sounds like it's been done before. Mary and Lines of Light even sound something Oasis might have done in the early years. In fact the band almost sounds as if the dude from Franz Ferdinand joined the White Stripes (The Subways are a band with two guys and a girl, no word if there was a pizza place involved), not that it would be a bad thing. And they even let the chick take over the vocals on a few verses and occasionally add a few soft harmonies giving the songs an extra boost. Youth for Eternity may not be the album that breaks The Subways, but that breakout success may only be an album or two away.

3.0 out of 5 stars Okay with the Subways, February 27, 2010

I loved "All or Nothing" by the Subways and decided to buy their "Young for Eternity" CD. Well, let's just say it is nowhere close to the enjoyment I received from "All or Nothing". One can hear how they have improved their sound from their earlier effort, "Young for Eternity". Yes one will find a few good tunes on "Young for Eternity" like "City Pavement" and " Holiday" but again not enough good tunes like I found on "All or Nothing".

5.0 out of 5 stars Young For Eternity, December 31, 2008

The Subways were definately one of the best newcomers to the indie rock scene in 2005. They're kind of like The Vines in that half their songs are Beatles-esque and the other are reminiscent of some of Nirvana's work (they actually got started playing Nirvana covers). The band is just incredibly likeable because they cover a variety of genres and they are such loveable people. Another thing they have going for them is the guy/girl duet thing in some of their songs, which I always find attractive for a band. Young For Eternity is the kind of album you listen to when you're driving around late at night with your friends during summer vacation. It's just such a fun, exciting album that never seems to get old. I'm a little disappointed that I have to settle with the American version because apparently the last track, "Somewhere," is shortened on the American version and that is one of the best songs. Also, the bonus track, "1 AM," is shortened to 2 minutes from 9. Someday I'm gonna have to go over to the UK and buy a ton of CDs...

5.0 out of 5 stars totally entertaining from start to finish, July 15, 2008

I listened to so many of the new Brit groups lately. The Editors, The Cribs, Cinematics, The Clientelle. etc. I was surprised with what this group had in store. These guys are better than the previously mentioned artists. They sound like the Hoosiers but with a more edgy sound... like Panic at the Disco without the choral backdrop. From start to finish i was totally entertained with their "rousing, punkypop". They also have a pretty female bass player who sings! I highly recommend that you buy this album. You won't be disappointed.
