Editorial Reviews

From Pat Martino's private collection, here is a mid-1960s live gig featuring the B-3 artistry of Gene Ludwig and drummer Randy Gelispie. Rarely, if ever, have these artists played with more inner fire, more unbridled virtuosity and pure unadulterated joy as they did here, captured in the full bloom of their musical youth. Pat Marino's burning swing and impovisational wizardry takes on added zip with Gene Ludwig manning the B-3. With the colorful, propulsive drummer Randy Gelispie driving things along, this is one gig which surely deserves a "legendary" epithet.

Absolutely essential for lovers of the OGD ensemble! That's Organ-Guitar-Drums for the uninitiated. If you're in that group get initiated with this collection. The venerable B3/guitar tradition of Jimmy Smith with Kenny Burrell and Wes Montgomery, Jack McDuff with George Benson, Larry Young with Grant Green, etc is beautifully captured in this live recording. We fans of the genre live for these releases--they are like finding a musical treasure chest. This one doesn't disappoint. The performances and grooves are of a high caliber and it's always a joy to uncover vintage Martino in this format. If you love his work with Don Patterson. be sure to check this one out.

I've been listening to this on repeat. These are three musicians who love to swing, and I'll gladly listen to them do it. Check out the tag on the first tune, and the burnin' rendition of Mr. P.C.

The performances now released here have been legendary among collectors and include some of the most amazing playing by Pat with the Gene Ludwig trio. If you love jazz guitar, fusion guitar, Pat Martino, or all three get this historically important recording.

5 STARS FOR PAT AND HIS CREW. MAN, THIS IS PAT AT THE TOP OF HIS GAME BUT I HAVE TO TELL YOU, THE RECORDING ITSELF IS REALLY MEDIOCRE. SOUNDS LIKE IT WAS PULLED OFF THE SOUNDBOARD. I'D PROBABLY GIVE THE RECORDING ITSELF A 3, HENCE THE 4 STAR REVIEW. I WOULD ALSO PROBABLY GO MP3 INSTEAD OF CD ON THIS TO SAVE A FEW BUCKS. I DO NOT SEE THE CD QUALITY BEING ANY BETTER ON DISC THEN IT IS ON MP3.

As a forever lover of the Organ Jamz and Pat Martino's playing, I have to weigh in on this; Yes Pat's playing is pretty astounding on this recording ... typical Pat but on some cuts, in some segments maybe the best I have ever heard him play. Trademark super clean staccato lines, perfect timing, intonation, every note as clear and clean as the note before and after; check out "Mr. P.C.", and my favorite "Colossus." I found it very interesting to hear him playing his "Only Pat Martino" repetitive riffs we all know and love as far back as 1967 - and check out the descending run on "Collossus" towards the end when he is trading bars with Randy Gelispie - AWESOME! As for the recording, yes the organ and drums are uneven, out of balance; the organ bass pedals too loud in spots, the drums mostly in the background then loud and harsh during the solos ... ah well comes with the situation live club date 1967 less than professional equipment/set-up/engineering etc.
Pat Martino fans need to have it!
