Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 1-3-- Benjamin outlines Tubman's life, with an emphasis on her childhood as a slave, the head injury she received as a teenager trying to help another slave, her work as the ``Moses'' of her people, and her role in later years as a spokesperson for women's rights. Worked into the biographical information is reference to the harsh living conditions the slaves endured, as well as the workings of the Underground Railroad. The full-color illustrations enhance the events in Tubman's life and give a sense of the times. Pocahontas traces the life of the Indian princess from her days as a carefree young girl through her role as a liaison and peacemaker between the white settlers and her people to her death at age 21. The characterization of Pocahontas as a strong, contributing woman of her time comes through not only in the text but also in the illustrations. Written with a sense of story, both books will appeal to beginning readers and serve as useful research tools. --Cheryl Cufari, N. A. Walbran Elem . School, Oriskany, NY

Harriet Tubman Freedom Fighter by Anne Benjamin is a very wonderful story. My favorite part of the book is when Harriet helps the slaves escape. They were escaping from the slave owners because they were over worked and mistreated. This is a very fascinating and interesting book.I hope someday you read this very good book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Benjamin does a great job teaching children about Tubman, November 29, 1998
By
Benjamin does a great job telling the story of Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad for children ages 9-12. The text is very large and simple to read. The pictures have little detail, however, keep the interest of the reader. The author portrays Tubman from a young girl of 3 years old and follows her life till she dies at age 93. Even though the illustrations are simple, they are bright and colorful, which will help clarify this newly introduced subject matter to young children. It is also noted that Harriet Tubman worked as a spy for the Northern army, spoke out for women's rights and started schools for black children and homes for black families, all before she died in 1913. The author does a great job in displaying how Harriet Tubman cared for all kinds of people and not just herself. This is an important lesson that children should be taught at an early age.
