Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 2-4-- An easy, basic biography that deals mainly with Keller's youth and time with Annie Sullivan. The book is illustrated with sprightly colored drawings that go along with the text but are not outstanding. Practically the same information, with some additions on her later life and a chronology, is found in Adler's A Picture Book of Helen Keller (Holiday, 1990.) Although his book is on a slightly higher reading level, its attractive illustrations and open format have greater appeal. --Margaret C. Howell, West Springfield Elementary School, VA

4.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for young minds, September 22, 2003
By
LGH (Houston, Texas United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Young Helen Keller: Woman of Courage (First-Start Biographies) (Paperback)
The first reviewer forgot to read the title; it is called "Young Helen Keller" so it definitely should end with her youth.
I am a third grade teacher and ALL of my students found it fascinating, so I am getting extra copies for future years.
This story is an excellent example of getting ahead against very large odds, and the way it is presented makes it easy for young seven or eight year olds to understand it.
The only reason I do not give it five stars is the weak illustrations.

5.0 out of 5 stars Get a clue, January 26, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Young Helen Keller: Woman of Courage (First-Start Biographies) (Paperback)
This is a book for young children. It is not a college level book. The previous reviewer needs to get a clue about the reading capabilities of an 8 year old. Not many are interested in reading 300 page biographies.
