Book Description

April 2, 2009
"An invaluable tool for every Hitler scholar; a fascinating portrait for every reader who is interested in Hitler." Simon Montefiore Note: This book has been written by a childhood friend of Hitler's. It reads like the author is still friendly with his memory of Hitler. Therefore, one cannot ascertain its veracity; therefore the reader must take this into account before drawing any conclusions. It is an extraordinary firsthand account by Hitler's only 'best friend' in his adolescent years. While it is decidedly 'pro-Hitler' it is none-the-less a fascinating insight into the formation of a complex and highly unusual personality. Included in this new Edition: Kubizek's description of debriefings by Allied Intelligence, and their assassination discussion, Hitler's interest in the Wright Brothers and his surprising view of aerial warfare years before aerial war even occurred.

5.0 out of 5 stars Adolf Hitler as a teenager: first-hand account, April 28, 2010

This review is from: The Young Hitler I Knew: "An extraordinary firsthand account by Hitler's only 'best friend' in his adolescent years" (Paperback)
Adolf Hitler is one of those few enigmas of history who seemed to come from nowhere and left the world with no trace of himself except the massive destruction in his wake. So many books have been written about him directly and indirectly that he seems to have become "marble-ized" as one historian described. This account of him, though, is valuable in its unique perspective; that it is the only one (that I know of, at least) of his youth, written by his only friend in youth, August Kubizek. Kubizek knew and understood the young Hitler better than anyone else did, and he does a very good job of conveying his understanding to the reader. He is thorough, but this is not a "tell-all" book in the contemporary sense. Kubizek sticks to the facts and remains respectful to the memory of his boyhood friend. The book is fascinating. I highly recommend this book.
