5.0 out of 5 stars Three Complete Books in one cover, NOT all sequential, November 25, 1998
By A Customer
Just as the Hornblower novels were not written in chronological order, this combination is #1, 2 and, I think, 5 (Not counting the short story "Hornblower's Temptation" in book "H..during the Crisis"). Same with "Indomitable Hornblower" 3 novels in one cover, but not in sequence. Not knocking the Novels, but the concept seems odd

4.0 out of 5 stars Young Hornblower novels, January 12, 2007
By
The first two of these novels are in chronologic order, but the third one in this volume is of a much later time, in Hornblowers life. While Forester wrote them in the the order published in this volume, there were two other novels, which he later wrote, which fills in the large time in Hornblower's career that is skipped between the second and third novel

5.0 out of 5 stars Hornblowers early years, January 12, 2000
Horatio is self-analytical whilst being completely honourable; an 'old-fashioned' hero. CSF succeeds in developing the character as he weaves in the turmoil of HH's profession and -- somewhat ragged -- personal fortunes. A wonderful read!

5.0 out of 5 stars Boiling Adventure, December 30, 2007

Horatio Hornblower has escaped this land lubber nearly as long as Hornblower served in the British Navy. I'm sad to realize the richness of Foresters' Hornblower laid off my bow's for so long but little could reflect my supreme joy at finding the series when the influence of the fictitious but nearly mythical figure was sorely needed in my life.

I understand that Foresters' writing was at one time rated the number one reading selection for all males. This was followed closely by women who also appreciated a robust adventure. This reflects true to course in my life as I have quickly swallowed up three volumes and am rapidly descending on a fourth.

Young Hornblower is an excellent venture into British History and maritime adventure. You can't help but taking in a substantial serving of historical truth in Youg Hornblower but beware young readers; there's a good bit of seaman like language in these tales as well.

Avast all other reading and tear into high seas peril and adventure with Midshipman/Lieutenant Hornblower.

This review is from: Young Hornblower Omnibus (Paperback)
My son is homeschooled and he took a Literature Class last year with several other homeschooler in a Coop with included Latin, Greek and Literature Classes.... The class loved this set of three books about Hornblower and it was Historically acurate.... His class studied about the History of this time and ships and maps and played Wisk a card game of that time at a formal buffet (they dressed formally also, a mother's dream) after reading this series of books..... I chose to purchase the three books in one complete book, you can purchase them separately, however with boys it is easier to have it in all in one, they tend to loss things.... they all loved the books, I would suggest these books to anyone... Shipped quickly and from the UK.....

5.0 out of 5 stars Hornblower is great stuff!, November 29, 1999
By A Customer
I just finished reading _Mr. Midshipman Hornblower_. I also watched the A & E 4 part series based on the book. *LOVED IT! * But, then I also love Cornwell's _Sharpe_ series, and he says he wrote that because there were no more _Hornblower_ books. I also love Trek & see alot of similarity in the way Hornblower perceives duty to how Picard does, and how Kirk charges ahead where angels fear to tread as Hornblower does. I have also read Patrick O'Brian's Aubrey/ Maturin and Weber's Honor Harrington-- both Hornblower and Sharpe are better soldiers and characters. There is little humanity to those officers, little questioning of duty or rightness of action. I look forward to reading _Lt. Hornblower_ and the next "New Frontier" Trek novels, by Peter David, another Hornblower-like captain. If you are interested in the _Hornblower_ series start with this book.
