I used it in teaching an Early Chilhood Methods and Materials Class. Helm does a really great job of explaining the child-directed nature of the Project Approach. She shows how to make the process come alive inside as well as outside of the classroom. I would recommend this to instructors as a text for students in an Early Chilhood Curricula or a Methods and Materials class. Students really got to experience how the Project Approach in teaching helps young children choose the trajectory of what they want to learn. Children can take their learning to creative places, of which early chilhood teachers might not even dream!

This book is filled with wonderful ideas for early childhood educators all the way through 1st grade teachers. I am now a kindergarten teacher and will be using the suggested strategies in my own classroom this coming fall. My only complaint, and the reason that I rated it a 3 is because the editing is horrible. I do not mean only one or two typos, I mean one or two per page. It took me longer to get through this text than it should have because I was so distracted by the constant errors. As this is their 2nd edition, they should have hammered out the kinks by now. Sadly, if I were a college professor teaching a course on the project approach, I would not use this book solely because of its mechanical errors. Ladies, if you need a new editor, please call me! Prior to teaching, editing was my passion.

Young Investigators: The Project Approach in the Early Years (Early Childhood Education Series) (Early Childhood Education (Teacher's College Pr)) I HIGHLY recommend this book for anyone who works with/teaches children from infants to 3rd grade! This book really lays out clearly how to implement the Project Approach in language that even teachers who have had no experience with the Reggio or Emergent Curriculum approach to learning/teaching can easily comprehend. A definite MUST HAVE it has excellent step by step guidance as well as simple check lists, graphs and forms in the back of the book to help visualize & organize what one must and in the order it should be done to get great results. The most recent version is the best one as it is a bit clearer and has more examples/samples to learn from. I read both.

This book outlined step by step how to implement a project approach in your classroom. It discussed why it was important to use this approach. It gave several in depth examples of projects. It also discussed pitfalls that teachers can fall into. I think the most helpful part of the book was that it gave specific advice for teachers who are new to project approach. The book was easy and enjoyable to read!

I have taught perhaps 60 sections of early childhood curriculum over the last 13 years, and have used the 1st edition and now the 2nd edition of this book ever since they came out.

I have found it a very readable introduction to the project approach, but with lots of key points covered, and while I'm a picky editor, my students have never complained about the errors--which I don't think are 1-2 a page anyway. It has useful charts and diagrams, and I bought the video about the fire truck project (described in chapter 7), and that is a very good complement to the book.

I'll start another early childhood curriculum class in four days--and all my students will be assigned readings from this book once again!

Excellent book for teachers and administrators who would like to integrate project learning in their curriculum. I ordered 20 copies for our teachers and it has been our guide and compass as we learn about the wonderful benefits of in-depth investigations in the early years. It has valuable information and is very easy to follow and user-friendly. I highly recommend this book!

this book arrived in great condition and I have enjoyed every chapter. The project approach is amazing! I cant wait to start using it.
If you are looking for a hands on approach to teaching all areas of development than this is a book to read. If you feel like your current way of teaching is not getting kids involved- try this approach...

As an educator, this book offer great insight into how to teach students with projects. Not only do kids love it because its more hands-on, it allows teachers to tie different aspects of the project to different standards and skills.
