5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely loved this when I was 12, June 27, 2009
This review is from: Young Love First Love [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This was a TV movie from 1979 that I saw (secretly; my parents never would have let me watch it!) when I was 12. It made a big impression on me. Popular girl Robin (Valerie Bertinelli) is attracted to the new kid at school Derek (an adorable Timothy Hutton). She comes from a permissive family with her mother (the always excellent Fionnula Flanagan) living with a boyfriend; Derek's family is very traditional. This young couple has to try to make their relationship work as Robin is a lot more eager to try sex than Derek is. It's kind of surprising for its time, when there were so many "boy pressuring girl to go all the way" plots, to have the girl in this one so level-headedly going to talk to a doctor about birth control and say she thinks about sex all the time. I think this movie might still appeal to young teens, but maybe they are too cynical today. In any case, great nostalgia value.
