The quiet release in 1999 of "Young, Naked & Very With It" by California band The Mondo Cresecendo passed by with barely a whisper in all but the most determinedly Indie press. The shame of this is that the album is one of those timeless gems that understands that adhering to some superficially simple rules of song construction can add up to music that outlives trends of the moment and deeply endears itself to those who stumble upon it. Using just clean sparse production, the warm but somehow distant voice of Jennifer Taylor, and a classic guitar band with the occasional addition of horns and keyboards, The Mondo Crescendo conjure up a breezy sound that resonates with the early 60's music that inspired Blondie when their indie credentials were still intact. Deceptively easy on the ear, The Mondo Crescendo pull off the tricky feat of simultaneously conveying the sound of those summer days we all wish we had along with the day to day angst that most of us actually have. Young, Naked & Very With It is a warm fuzzy treasure that deserved far more attention than it ever got but maybe thats part of what makes it special for those that do discover it.
