Amazon.com Review

From purple spotted swallowtails to cloudless giant sulfurs to Indian moon moths, butterflies and their night-flying cousins, moths, come in myriad shapes and sizes. With this intriguing little pop-up book and model butterfly specimen from Matthew Reinhart and the acknowledged master of paper engineering, Robert Sabuda, young naturalists can begin their own metamorphosis into lepidopterists (those who study and collect butterflies). Brilliant, shimmering paper butterflies and moths flutter through the pages of this short, informative book. Pull the tab to witness the transformation of a pupal caterpillar into a winged butterfly, or to see the surprising underside of a South American morpho. Discover the ingenious and sometimes bizarre techniques these lovely insects employ to ward off their predators. An exquisite paper model of a New Guinea birdwing in a faux wood (also made of paper) frame gives readers a humane start to a lifetime of collecting (the authors note that "no butterflies were harmed in the making of the book!"). For more pop-up magic, check out The Young Naturalist's Pop-Up Handbook of Beetles. (Ages 6 to 10) --Emilie Coulter

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book, November 29, 2002

This review is from: Young Naturalist's Pop-Up Handbook: Butterflies (Hardcover)
I bought this book for my daughter last Christmas. We still read it at bedtime. The paper butterflies are beautiful and tough. The writing is factual and engaging and the butterflies have kept their shape and stood-up pretty well to little hands bending, pushing, and pulling. The paper butterfly which comes with the book is nice too. We also have the "Beetle" book, which is pretty spectacular as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Educational Book, March 4, 2002

This review is from: Young Naturalist's Pop-Up Handbook: Butterflies (Hardcover)
I bought this book for a 7 year-old girl who reads fluently, with the thought in mind that she might start enjoying reading science books, if she sees pretty pictures "popping-up". She loves it... her 4 year-old brother is mesmerized with the book too... I bought another book for them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gorgeous! -- some are shiny, some are fuzzy., November 26, 2001

Wow! Butterflies are almost a natural subject for a pop-up book, and Sabuda does not disappoint. The butterflies and moths spring to life and fly right out of the book at you! The easy narration flows well and is full of interesting facts. Makes a perfect springboard for curious young minds that want to go on and learn more about our winged friends. Comes with a beautiful paper butterfly in a paper frame for your wall. Also check out its companion book -- "Beetles." (Yes, the bugs. But you'll be surprised how beautiful they can be.)
