Editorial Reviews

Review

Ariane Csonka Comstock proves in the deed that she is the best qualified to write The Young Person's Guide to the Opera, which one hopes will be cherished in every library. --William F. Buckley

The young -- and not so young -- will learn to recognize the greatness of opera, music and words, from this knowledgeable and entertaining book, and will be ready for the special thrill when it comes their way. --Dmitri Nabokov, operatic basso, author and translator of Vladimir Nabokov

I see a constant need for this book in libraries, to prepare young people for their first opera, but also for anyone who hasn't the time or desire to work through the weighty opera guides on the market. --Betty Scherer, Librarian

Csonka speaks five languages and has translated 15 operas published by Kalmus plus the Shchedrin/Nabokov Lolita. 5.0 out of 5 stars Bought for my son -- changed my life, July 26, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: The Young Person's Guide to the Opera (Hardcover)
I bought this book for my son, because I wanted him to enjoy culture. I have a great education (engineer) but never got into opera. I started reading it to him, then I bought a CD of Turando (because I love Pavarotti). And now my wife and I are hooked. I really appreciate the way the stories are told, and the background - and especially the guide to pronunciation.

5.0 out of 5 stars Knowledgeable and entertaining for young & not-so-young, July 25, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: The Young Person's Guide to the Opera (Hardcover)
Not all literature has yielded great operas. Not all great operas are based on great literature. But sometimes the perfect symbiosis was achieved. The young-and not so young- will learn to recognize all this and more, from this knowledgeable and entertaining book, and will be ready for the special thrill when it comes their way.
