Classic stuff!,
By Paul M. Ramey (KY) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Young Rascals (Audio CD)
The (Young) Rascals were one of the best American bands from the classic mid to late 60's era of rock. Most of their best stuff is found on this set (although I wish they'd found room for "It's Love"). The mastering is good, and I applaud Rhino's decision to present the material from the first few albums in mono (the stereo mixes are way too 'ping-pongy'). An essential addition to any collection of classic 60s rock music.

Listening to this album takes me back to over 40 years ago. After 43 years (from the release date), the music still can generate the same feel that excited the origininal generation of listeners. I have listened to other old recordings that I once loved, only to be subjected to really dry and forgettable sounds.
As much as I love this album, in this moment of disappointment, I can only give this a 4 star rating. The reason for this deflated score is that there are no bonus selections featured. Shame on Atlantic Records for not digging out some old extra songs from the archives for the CD.

Many rock bands augment their sound in the studio with additional musicians, but with the exception of having guitarist Cornish overdub electric bass, the Rascals' first album mostly sounds like the Rascals live. They were great innovators, including Cavaliere's use of Hammond organ, Cornish's varied and contrapuntal guitar lines, Danelli's precision and power, and the three part harmonies including the remarkable Brigati. I have listened to this album with great pleasure for the past 32 years, and probably will continue to do so for the rest of my life.
