He has curated shows for the Bronx Museum of Art, New York University and the Woodstock Center for Photography. Carlo McCormick is Senior Editor of Paper Magazine. #For ten years in the 1990's, New York's Alleged Gallery provided not only a breeding ground but also played the role of willing accomplice for some of the most vibrant American art to come along in decades. By exhibiting then emerging talents such as Mark Gonzales, Chris Johanson, Rita Ackermann, Susan Cianciolo, Barry McGee, Margaret Kilgallen, Harmony Korine, Mike Mills, Shepard Fairey, Ed Templeton and Terry Richardson, the gallery served as an unofficial creative headquarters for some of popular culture's most recognized figures.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Alleged represented total freedom, belligerence and anarchy! Also, if it weren't for Alleged, myself and a lot of other artists would probably be working at Starbucks" -- Terry Richardson

"It might be a little romanticized in my memory, but it had a big impact on me." -- Spike Jonze

"Every opening seemed a little sketchy. There were like crazy happenings, drunken kids yelling in the streets, drugs, cops." -- Chloe Sevigny

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally!, July 9, 2005
By
This review is from: Young, Sleek, and Full of Hell (Paperback)
I have been waiting for this book for a long time. Although I wasn't a regular when the gallery was open, over the years I have become a big fan of the art and artists that were exhibiting there. This book is filled with interesting photos and anecdotes about the struggles of being an independent artist and gallery in an increasingly more corporate world. New York is not the same now. This book reminds me that one mustn't have to sell out to make a mark.

5.0 out of 5 stars allegedreview, August 25, 2005
This review is from: Young, Sleek, and Full of Hell (Paperback)
This book gives you a look at what it was like from the people who were there. I only went to a few shows but these people lived there. McGee, Kilgallen, Campbell, Gonzalez and more. Photos of the shows and behind the scenes of life and work at the gallery. Plus great interviews with dozens of artists and people who were there telling how they found out about it and there wildest alleged experiences. Great book, every city in the world needs an alleged gallery, I know mine does.

Love this book! Contains some great insights into the early careers of some of my favorite artists. There should be more books like this!
