Proclaimed by many to be perhaps the greatest examples of Takashi Miike’s work, the Young Thugs films (which are to a degree autobiographical) mix comedy and romance with violence and dysfunction. Set in a small fishing village in Osaka, two friends are trapped in a life where brutality is an everyday occurrence, but manage to find their own way in the world. Following them through school and them onto their adult lives, Young Thugs Innocent Blood and Nostalgia certainly live up to their titles.
