Grade 7-12 These stories vary considerably in their power as literature, in their scariness, and in length. Authors include Ray Bradbury, Elizabeth Coatsworth, and Zena Henderson. All ten stories do use children as the main characters, but some have a more sophisticated adult appeal. The archaic language in Evelyn Smith's ``Teragram'' will be cumbersome for today's YAs, and the ambiguity at the end of ``Mistress Sary'' by William Tenn will also turn off many readers. The introduction by Isaac Asimov is the best part of the book. He describes a number of 20th-Century conveniences as things we take for granted, such as electric-eye door openers and elevators. He also explains the human urge for magic and why it continues to thrill us. Too bad the stories are too flat and dull to show that same thrill. Leslie Chamberlin, Napa City-County Lib . , Calif.
