Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

In 1992, when writer/artist Liefeld launched his original Youngblood series, hypertrophied superheroes with enormous guns and costumes covered in leather pouches were all the rage, and Liefeld was the master of the style—the first issue of the series reportedly sold around a million copies. The story made no sense at all, but who cared about that when you could look at a really dynamic drawing of a dude with a totally rad hairstyle and biceps three times the size of his head? For this re-mastered edition of the first five issues, Liefeld apparently decided to go back and fix his mistakes. He didn't correct errors of visual storytelling or basic anatomy—that would've required redrawing the whole thing—but writer Casey has resequenced the original pages and rewritten virtually all the dialogue in an attempt to give the chaotic assemblage a comprehensible plot, a touch of characterization and even some hints of a theme (about the culture of celebrity and the effect of constant attention on public figures). There are only so many things even a gifted writer can turn a sow's ear into, and the story's still a violent mess. Liefeld's relentless, this-one-goes-to-11 artwork is amusing as a nostalgia trip. 4.0 out of 5 stars Yes it's bad but so was Transformers 2, August 22, 2009

This review is from: Youngblood Volume 1 (Youngblood) (Hardcover)
I am really shocked that there aren't more reviews for this little gem. Liefeld's Youngblood and Image comics in general were the reason I started reading comics oh-so-many years ago. I still have the original issues bagged, boarded, and stored in my closet, as do the other ten million people who bought these comics hoping to retire on them in the not-so-distant future. But every bubble bursts.

Say what you will about Liefeld's art but it is certainly dynamic and makes you wonder at any given moment, did he just draw that? And why can't I look away? And that is the reason for reading, no actually looking at Youngblood. Never mind the story, (I reread the comics in preparation of this release. Not that there's any reason to do so. They very much the same) it's typical Liefeldian work: cool looking characters with little character, hero-time traveler, impending doom, faceless ninja dudes killed in three or four connected panels.

So it gets four stars for the art, snazzed up coloring, and a nostalgic trip down memory lane before the comic book industry hit the wall hard. Buy it, love it, hate it, share it with a friend or enemy, I just hope they release a second volume.

And Diehard is one of coolest looking characters ever. Though I do think Deadpool might be wondering if he has a half-brother running around.

5.0 out of 5 stars High Quality Print, August 10, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Youngblood Volume 1 (Youngblood) (Hardcover)
This is for everyone.

I mean this because I already own Youngblood first print comics from the 90s. I wanted to own a paperback in a format where I can pick the book, read it all over again at hand. This works beautiful as the print has been remastered, high quality paper and even more dialogue.

If you are not familiar with Rob Liefeld, GET THIS. He is one of the best comic book creators ever. You will love the character design and as much as people criticized his work, his drawing is great.

4.0 out of 5 stars Product update., May 10, 2008
This review is from: Youngblood Volume 1 (Youngblood) (Hardcover)
I also had pre-ordered this here (unfortunatly, Amazon cancelled the order since the item was still late). Anyhow, I asked Rob Liefeld when it would be out on 04-25-08 and he replied "Finally leaving for the printer next week! Should arrive in June!" So there is the most recent update, straight from the man himself. I still look forward to the book & plan to reorder it when it becomes available.
