Waterproof Technology

Youngstown's waterproof technology separates this glove from other winter gloves. Numerous winter gloves in the market are simply "lined" but do not offer a moisture barrier membrane. Lined gloves are fine in dry conditions, but once precipitation is present, lined gloves lose their effectiveness--once your hand is wet it gets cold much sooner.

The Waterproof Winter Plus gloves feature a membrane that's waterproof, windproof, and breathable. This specialized membrane blocks the water from reaching your hand, keeping your hands warm and dry. At the same time, the membrane allows for your sweat to escape to help regulate comfort and temperature inside the glove.

Dual Functionality

Youngstown's focus has always been in the performance work glove realm, and its gloves are built to be as durable as possible while still maintaining dexterity and comfort. However, customers find unexpected uses for Youngstown gloves, such as biking, rock climbing, scuba diving, obstacle courses, horse riding, and more. This dual functionality of work and sport is extremely prevalent in Youngstown's winter models, with hunting, ice fishing, skiing, and snowboarding just some of the winter activities that this glove has found its way to.

A Note On Warmth

Temperature is subjective from person to person, and Youngstown have had users comment that their gloves didn't keep their hands warm and others say the glove was too hot. Youngstown designs its gloves to be as dexterous as possible while still providing warmth and waterproof technology, so different hands will have different reactions.

Additionally, your level of body movement can also determine your comfort level. If you are working and moving your core temperate will stay higher and as a result your hands will too. However, if you are sitting in freezing temperatures watching a ball game or not moving, your hands are more likely to get cold. Should you need protection in extremely cold temperatures, Youngstown recommends its Waterproof Winter XT and the 200 gram Thinsulate. However, if you are in cold, wet temperatures and doing work that requires dexterity and durability you will really appreciate these Waterproof Winter Plus gloves.

Sizing Your Glove

Use a cloth tape measure on the hand you use the most, and measure from crook between your thumb and index finger straight across to the base of the pinky and then all the way around back to where you started. Based on the circumference of your palm (excluding the thumb), here's a general guideline to sizing:

  • Small: 8.0 to 8.5 inches
  • Medium: 8.5 to 9.0 inches
  • Large: 9.0 to 9.5 inches
  • Extra Large: 9.5 to 10.0 inches
  • Double Extra Large: 10.0 to 10.5 inches

Unconditional Guarantee

Each customer has a different belief for the life expectancy of their gloves. Furthermore, it is not uncommon that the glove you have selected is not a match to the job you are performing. Because of this, Youngstown Glove offers its unconditional guarantee: If you are not satisfied with your gloves, Youngstown Glove will replace the pair or work with you to get you into the right model.

Customer Questions & Answers

Customer Reviews

The glove fits very good and is comfortable.
I used my gloves when raining and, although I got to the end of my trip with my hands dry, when I got my gloves to do my ride back home they were wet inside.

I ordered size small, because they didn't have an extra small size.

The Good:

* GREAT gripping surface. These are the best gloves for hanging onto things when wet and muddy I've ever come across.

* They really are waterproof! Not merely water resistant, but genuinely rubber-glove level waterproof. Stick your hands in a bucket of water and the insides of these gloves stay dry. (Waterproof gloves inevitably get a little damp from your hands sweating during longer periods of use/activity.)

* Dexterity is pretty good for a winter glove; particularly for a waterproof one! (Assuming you get a large enough size.)

* So far the exterior shell is standing up to heavy use/abuse.

The Bad:

* Not nearly as warm as I'd hoped. Apparently the manufacturer's idea of the 'harshest of winter conditions' is something rather milder than what we live with near the Canadian border. These gloves would serve admirably for most outdoor uses such as snowmobiling, but when your job involves handling cold, wet steel in sub-zero temps, you're going to still get aching, numb fingers in fairly short order.

* 'Floppy' gauntlet cuffs allow the cuffs to become bunched up (and frozen in their bunched up position if working in the cold and wet.)

* The lining does tend to get out of place and bunch up in the fingers, which can be a real aggregation when your work requires you to regularly take your gloves off and on.

Other thoughts: Sizing does run small; I'd order a size larger than you usually get for gloves. I really am impressed with these gloves; they'll beat any general-purpose winter glove I've seen, and if you must have waterproof winter gloves, these do an admirable job. But, there's still quite a bit of room for improvement. Recommended, with a few reservations.

I bought these gloves because the winter gloves I've had are big and puffy and make doing pretty much any sort of small work impossible.

These gloves, while a little more cumbersome than I had hoped are very warm and very waterproof while still being very breathable and easy to work with.

I've also used them whenever I need to do some work outside whether that be turning valves or picking up tree branches and while I'm not sure they'd stand up to all day work for more than a winter so far they've done everything I've asked.

One problem that I have had with them is that the liner has a tendency to get bunched up in the fingers and sometimes that can be a little bit of a pain in the butt to get unbunched. It only happens in one of my gloves though so maybe it is a rare thing.

EDIT: 12/22/2010 I bought another pair when I saw them pop up on the deal of the day page. They are still in the package though because the original set I bought are still going strong. After almost 3 winters none of the seems are busting, the gloves are still waterproof and as warm as the day I bought them. I'm very happy with them.

Just bought a pair of these for cycling to work in cold weather. Very nice gloves. Good insulation but also thin, which is great for dexterity. One thing is that they do get damp inside on longer rides (an hour or longer), so it might not be wise to use these for many times per day for long periods of time. I wouldn't worry about it unless you were using these for like 5+ hours per day, in that case they might soak through and lose their insulation, but you could always just buy two pairs and switch them out. They do dry relatively quickly, so that's not a huge concern.

I am 5'10" with what I consider to be normal sized hands for my height and the large gloves fit perfectly. 6' or above I'd probably get XL (sorry can't help any larger than that), and if I were 5'7" or so medium would probably be right. The gloves are designed to fit tight, but not so tight to restrict range of motion.

I have looked long and hard for a warm, waterproof, and tough winter glove. I could not be more pleased with these!!!! I'm a crew chief in the Air Force in Pittsburgh which means I work outside all the time. These gloves give me enough dexterity to do a lot of tasks that others cannot do with normal winter gloves.

Also, I work in Pyrotechnics and I do several winter shows a year. These gloves are tough enough that they have survived 3 shows. A normal pair of work gloves you'd buy at sears would normally last that long before they are worn through. I still use these gloves every day at my full time job at the base. 6 other people i work with have purchased them already.

Highly recommended.

...I'd also like to add that during a fireworks show i ran a nail through the outside shell of one of the fingers and they are STILL waterproof.

I love these gloves :)

Before I go further though I would like to suggest that every but up a size, I have hands considered to be medium but the mediums were a little small. They have stretched a bit though and they fit much better now.

Ok so I have found the gloves to be extremely water proof I can mes around in slushy snow and not have to worry about my hands getting wet. I also live in MN and it really cold up here and they have kept my hands warmer than any other glove I've ever owned in -10 degree weather. Not to say my hands were warm but I've never had a pair of gloves or mitten that retain heat at the temperature. They also have a very tough palm and very tough finger pads. It remains flexible while giving the toughness and grip I wanted.

These glove are perfect for snowboarding and that is what I use them for. They hold up extremely well under trial of the tow rope.
They also just look totally BA when you wear them so....
