Product Description

Youngstown, Ohio was a rapidly growing industrial city in the early 20th century. In 1900, the city had a population of about 45,000; ten years later, it nearly doubled to 80,000, and by 1920 had reached 120,000. This phenomenal growth was reflected in a number of structures that dotted the cityís skyline, including the Mahoning Bank Building, the Masonic Temple, and the plants of three major steel companies along the banks of the Mahoning River. Youngstown also had new places for its citizens to play during this periodóIdora Park, Mill Creek Park, and Wick Park. And this was all preserved for the future through another early-20th century phenomenonóthe postcard. Over 190 vintage postcards illustrate this book, which will bring the reader back to the era when Youngstown was rapidly becoming the third largest steel producer in the nation. ÝÝ

5.0 out of 5 stars A unique slice of history..., September 3, 2003
By A. Ort "aorto" (Youngstown, Ohio) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is a gem of a book showing Youngstown's history in the form of postcards.

The book is presented in a sepia tone giving it a look of nostalgia. On each page is a postcard in a thematic trip through Youngstown's early history. There are captions under each photo that give a bit of historical background.

If you've been on any online auction recently, you'll find that postcards are abundant, even postcards pushing 100 years old. They provide a unique slice of history on how a city such as Youngstown was perceived and presented. Today it is all but impossible to find current postcards of Youngstown.

This is a nice book to have in your collection or to lay on your coffee table as a conversation starter. It is a nice tribute to an age gone by.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Native Son's Reflection, January 12, 2009
By Literate Lawman "Todd" (Northern California) - See all my reviews
I found the book to be a very clear, concise, and informative photographic essay about the city where I spent the majority of my formative years while growing from youth to adulthood. After completing the book I was very nostalgic for the city, as well as the people, who helped to provide me with the critical values-based foundation that has sustained me during both the good and the trying times that have occurred in my life since I moved away!

4.0 out of 5 stars Youngstown book good, August 30, 2007
Like most of the Arcadia books, this is mostly just pictures with extensive captions. I think they are a good value for the price. Lots of historic pictures, and if 'a picture is worth a thousand words'... They are a good way to get some great historical pictures out of the attics and historical societies and into the hands of the general public. Arcadia now has thousands of titles and you can now search them by geographic area to find the ones near your area of interest.
