Editorial Reviews

Review

"Anyone and everyone will benefit from this complete and total resource supporting the rescuing, caregiving, and adoption of our homeless and stray companion animals. If you're interested in adopting or know someone who is, I predict this to be the future encyclopedia on companion care. With this book you will never be without an answer or a support system."--Debra Wilson Skelton, actress and animal advocate

From the Back Cover

“Whether working on their own, as part of an adoption group, or in a shelter, those who rescue homeless dogs are a special breed. Rescue requires compassion, dedication, and lots of work. If you're contemplating involvement in rescue, have just started out, or have adopted a rescue dog, this book will help you understand and navigate the risks and rewards of your new adventure.”
—Nancy Peterson, The Humane Society of the United States

Just as first-time parents often wish their newborns came with instruction manuals, families adopting/rescuing dogs also need clear-cut advice at their fingertips. To make life easier and more enjoyable for those who cannot turn away, Your Adopted Dog provides step-by-step guidance and support, including:

• The pros and cons of adopting from shelters, private rescue groups, or picking
up that pooch wandering alone on the street

• What to do in the critical first 48 hours after your dog comes home

• Creating a dog-safe, dog-friendly home and yard

• Preparing for emergencies and disasters

• Handling health and behavior problems common to rescued dogs

• Advice on integrating the rescue into your home

• True dog rescue stories with happy endings

• Finding a new home for a rescued dog

• Finally, after all the hard work you've done to help your friend in need, how to
take the time to have fun together

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This book can't decide on its audience. It intermingles advice for rescuers and advice for adopters, which doesn't work. These two different groups have different experience levels and needs for guidance. For rescuers, much of the information is too basic. For adopters, some of the information is irrelevant. Having to pick and choose the information that matters makes for difficult reading.

This book also vacillates between positive, more modern methods and traditional advice. It is written by two authors - and it shows. A paragraph on bonding with reward-based training might be followed by a paragraph on electric shock collars.

I strongly recommend "The Adopted Dog Bible" to meet all your adoption needs!Petfinder.com The Adopted Dog Bible: Your One-Stop Resource for Choosing, Training, and Caring for Your Sheltered or Rescued Dog
